Kenya sends first observation satellite into space

NAIROBI, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Saturday marked a new milestone in space exploration by launching the first satellite dubbed "Taifa 1" into space after three botched attempts linked to bad weather.

Developed by nine Kenyan engineers, the observation satellite blasted off aboard SpaceX's Falcon-9 full-thrust rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E), at Vandenberg Space Force Base in the United States of America.

10 people returning from a funeral die in Kenya bus crash

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least 10 people died when the bus they were traveling in left the road and rolled several times in southern Kenya, police said Sunday.

The passengers were on their way back to the coastal city of Mombasa after attending a funeral in the Mwatate area, Taita Taveta County, on Saturday evening.

Mwatate Police Chief Morris Okul told The Associated Press that the driver of the bus survived and was hospitalized in critical condition.

Turkiye Embassy distributes food aid in South Sudan

11 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkish Embassy in South Sudan, on Tuesday, donated 183 packages of food to vulnerable Muslims in South Sudan as part of aid provided during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The food packages containing cooking oil, beans, rice, sugar and maize flour were handed over to Muslims in South Sudan by the Turkish Embassy in coordination with the Turkish charity, TIKA (Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency) and South Sudan Islamic Council.

15 killed in Nigeria bus-truck collision

LAGOS, April 9 (Xinhua) -- At least fifteen people were killed Saturday when a bus and a truck collided head-on along a busy highway in the southern part of Nigeria, local traffic police said Sunday.

Bisi Kazeem, the national spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, disclosed this in a statement and said the accident took place at the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway at about 8:20 p.m., local time.

At least 44 killed in two attacks in northern Burkina Faso

OUAGADOUGOU, April 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 44 civilians were killed on Thursday night in two terrorist attacks in northern Burkina Faso's Sahel Region, said a regional government official on Saturday.

In a statement, Lieutenant Colonel Rodolphe Sorgho, who is the governor of the Sahel Region, said that armed terrorist groups broke into the villages of Kourakou and Tondobi, located about five km from the commune of Seytenga in the province of Seno, killing 44 civilians and causing injuries and material damages.

Regional commander of operations support murdered in Sierra Leone

FREETOWN, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Matthew Banya, a regional commander of the operations support division, the paramilitary wing of the Sierra Leone Police Force, was killed by an unknown assailant in northern Sierra Leone's Makeni city late Saturday, leading to panic among local citizens, local police confirmed Sunday.

The confirmation was from Sahr Yonba Senesie, the northeast regional police commander and assistant inspector of the police, whose portfolio includes maintaining law and order in the city of Makeni.
