CHANCAY, Peru, Jan 18 (Reuters) - In September, a group of Brazilian farmers and officials arrived in the Peruvian fishing town of Chancay. The draw: a new Chinese mega port rising on the Pacific coast, promising to turbo charge South America's trade ties with China.
The $3.5 billion deep water port, set to start operations late this year, will provide China with a direct gateway to the resource-rich region. Over the last ten years, Beijing has unseated the United States as the largest trade partner for South America, devouring its soy, corn and copper.
LIMA, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Peru's Consumer Price Index (CPI) at the national level saw a 0.30 percent increase in December, closing the January-December 2023 period with an inflation rate of 3.41 percent, the National Institute of Statistics and Information (INEI) reported Monday.
The report said that the CPI increase registered in December at the national level was due to increases above the national average in the transport divisions by 1.10 percent, food and non-alcoholic beverages by 0.38 percent, and tobacco by 0.36 percent.

LIMA, Nov 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Peruvian Andes’ mountaintop ice, which represents most of the world’s tropical glaciers, has lost more than half of its area due to climate change, the Ministry of Environment said Thursday.
To wit, the glaciers have receded by 1,348 square kilometers since 1962, according to the latest measurements, the National Institute of Glacier and Ecosystem Research reported.
LIMA, Oct 26 (NNN-XINHUA) — At least four people were killed and dozens injured after two passenger buses collided head-on in early morning Wednesday in the southern Peruvian department of Cusco, authorities said.
The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time at kilometer 60 of the Espinar-Cusco roadway in Espinar province, the Superintendence of Ground Transportation of People, Cargo and Goods (Sutran) said in a statement.
One of the buses was traveling the Cusco-Arequipa route and the other was going in the opposite direction when they collided head on.
LIMA, Sept 14 (NNN-XINHUA) — At least 10 people were killed and nine others injured after a minivan and a dump truck collided head-on on Tuesday night in southern Peru’s Arequipa region, media reported Wednesday.
The accident took place at the entrance of a tunnel at about 9:10 p.m. local time (1410 GMT) and two minors were among the dead, the reports said.
Police and firefighters arrived at the scene to help the victims and clear the road.
Local police have started a preliminary investigation to determine the causes of the accident.
