CAIRO, April 11. /TASS/. The Sudanese Military Transitional Council headed by First Vice President and Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf is making arrangements to assume the power in the country for a year, the local Baj News website says. According to the officially unconfirmed reports, a group of military officials has staged a coup d’etat in the country, completely ousting President Omar al-Bashir from power.
The Sudanese military is expected to deliver a statement on state TV and radio shortly. Additional army units and armored vehicles have been deployed throughout the streets of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, with Khartoum, with police having vanished. The Khartoum international airport is closed.
In late February, President Omar al-Bashir signed a decree appointing Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf First Vice President. During the course of his career, he headed the country’s military intelligence and chaired the Joint Chiefs of Staff, after his resignation in 2010 he served as a diplomat. He has been the Minister of National Defense since 2015. It was Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf who called on Sudan’s law enforcement agencies to refrain from violently opposing the protesters, who have been staging a massive sit-in by army headquarters since April 6.
