India: Groom leaves wedding at denial of dowry in Kanpur

Kanpur: A groom fled away from marriage venue as he was denied dowry, police said.

The incident took place at a mass marriage event in Sharifapur village of the district in the very presence of UP Minister Dharam Pal Singh, as reported.

The groom was one among the 144 couples getting married at Chief Minister's mass marriage programme here on Saturday.

According to the police officials, the groom left the 'mandap' for a minute on the pretext of drinking a glass of water.

But he was reported to have disappeared from the wedding venue.

When he did not return, a massive search was carried out but he could not be traced.

Later, the girl's mother told the officials that the groom had demanded a motorcycle in dowry.

When she expressed her incapacity citing monetary limitation, he planned the departure and fled away, an official said.
