18 Sep 2021; MEMO: The Egyptian National Railways Authority has announced raising the price of train platform tickets by 300 per cent on all lines, Al Khaleej Online reported on Friday.
The National Railways Authority confirmed that the decision, which raises the price from one to three Egyptian pounds, will take effect on Thursday.
According to the National Railways Authority, this decision was taken to increase income from those entering the platforms without travelling.
This type of ticket is termed a "platform waiting fee ticket" for those not travelling but accompanying relatives or friends to the trains.
Anyone who does not pay for the ticket will be fined. The National Railways Authority did not confirm how much it would fine the violators, but according to Al Khaleej Online, undercover officers will be spread across the train stations to look for those evading ticket fees.
It is worth noting that Egypt has witnessed tragic train accidents due to the chaos on the streets and railways, in addition to the old and decaying trains that are not subject to proper maintenance.
