Indian Polls: NCP says Maha SP-BSP alliance immaterial

Mumbai, Mar 19 (PTI) On the day the SP and the BSP announced to contest all 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra together, the NCP Tuesday said the development would not have any adverse impact on the electoral prospects of the Congress-NCP combine.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik also downplayed Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh leader Prakash Ambedkar's decision to not join the Congress-NCP combine and contest all Lok Sabha seats.

India: poll officials seize Rs 1.5 cr from car in Beed

Mumbai, Mar 19 (PTI) Five bags with Rs 1.5 crore in cash was Tuesday seized by district election officials in Maharashtra's Beed, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of election officials from the district collector's office intercepted a luxury car in the afternoon at Pandharwadi Phata, over 375 kilometres from here, and made the seizure, an official said.

"The Rs 1.5 crore cash was packed in five bags. Income Tax officials have been alerted. Counting of cash is currently underway in Amalner police station. The man in the car has been detained," he added.

Jet pilots threaten to stop flying, set Mar 31 deadline on bailout, salaries

Mumbai, Mar 19 (PTI) The umbrella body of the domestic pilots of the nearly crippled Jet Airways Tuesday threatened to stop flying from April 1, if the resolution plan is delayed and salary dues are not cleared by the end of this month.

The decision was taken at the annual meeting of Jet Airways domestic pilots body National Aviators Guild after a meeting here lasting for over 90 minutes.

India: Huge cache of explosives seized in Maha; one held

Nashik, Mar 18 (PTI) A huge cache of explosives, including over 2,000 gelatin sticks and a number of detonators, was seized from a van in Nashik district of Maharashtra, police said on Monday.

The vehicle driver was arrested for allegedly carrying the explosives illegally, Jaykheda police station's assistant police inspector Ganesh Gurav said.

Indian Polls: 11,558 ads, posters removed from Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 17 (PTI) As many as 11,558 unauthorised political advertisements and posters have been removed from Mumbai suburban district ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, an election official said.

Besides, 16 police complaints of such unauthorised boards have also been filed in the last one week as part of implementation of the model code of conduct in the district, he said.

India: Debt-ridden policeman hangs self, blames seniors

Mumbai, Mar 14 (PTI) A debt-ridden policeman allegedly hanged himself to death at his house in Amravati district of Maharashtra, apparently as he did not get salary for two months and was unable to send money to his son studying in Pune, police said on Thursday.

Assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) Ramsingh Gulabsingh Chavan, 56, committed suicide on Monday in Chaparashipura locality in Amravati city, an official said.

Police recovered a suicide note later, in which Chavan has blamed Amravati police commissioner and deputy police commissioner for the drastic step.

India: Sharad Pawar not to contest Lok Sabha poll

Pune, Mar 11 (PTI) NCP chief Sharad Pawar Monday said he will not contest next month's Lok Sabha election.

The 78-year-old veteran politician said as two members of his family are going to contest the polls, "somebody had to step back."

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the NCP chief's decision to pull out from poll fray was because he had "sensed the change in the air".

India: Two found dead inside room after pest control fumigation

Pune, Mar 7 (PTI) Two men working in the canteen of a city-based college were found dead on Wednesday inside their room, which had been fumigated for pest control, police said on Thursday.

According to police, their room had been fumigated on Sunday and the duo had gone to their friend's place to stay for two days. They returned to their room on Tuesday night to sleep, but were found dead the next day.

Police suspect that they died of suffocation due to inhalation of poisonous fumes.

India: Maratha community threatens to vote against BJP-Sena

Mumbai, Mar 6 (PTI) The Maratha community in Maharashtra Wednesday threatened to vote against BJP and Shiv Sena in the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, saying the two parties had failed to fulfil their demands.

The decision was taken by members of the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) at a meeting.

MKM convener Mahesh Dongre said the Sena-BJP government had failed to fulfil the promises given to the Maratha community.
