India: Man rapes two minor girls

Nagpur, Feb 27 (PTI) Two minor girls were allegedly raped by a man at knife point in Lakadganj area here in Maharashtra, police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred Tuesday night when an unidentified man lured the girls, aged 6 and 4, into accompanying him under some pretext, when they were playing near their houses, an official release said.

Indian stock market extends losses after IAF LoC violation

ISLAMABAD, Feb 26 (APP): After opening lower, the Indian stock markets – Sensex and Nifty – extended losses on Tuesday, following violation of Line of Control (LoC) by Indian Air Force (IAF), Business Today of India reported.

According to the report, the Sensex plunged nearly 500 points in opening deals and Nifty slipped below the 10,740 level. Most of the BSE sectoral indices were trading in the red, led by banking, power, PSU, realty and IT stocks.

India: 5 booked for raping woman during 13-day captivity

Palghar, Feb 25 (PTI) Five persons have been booked in Maharashtra's Palghar district for kidnapping a newly-married woman, holding her captive for almost two weeks and repeatedly raping her, police said Monday.

An official said the 21-year-old victim's ordeal began on February 6 when a man posing as a policeman came to her house in Pragati Nagar in Nalasopara and asked her to accompany him to the police station.

MNS burns packets of 'Pakistani' spices in Bombay

Mumbai, Feb 25 (PTI) Activists of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) burned packets of spices they claimed to have been manufactured in Pakistan and being sold to customers, in Sanpada area of neighbouring Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

A MNS leader Monday said the party activists had got a tip-off that a shop in Sanpada node was selling packets of spices that are made in Karachi.

Bombay HC pulls up BJP corporator over illegal hoardings

Mumbai, Feb 25 (PTI) A BJP corporator on Monday drew the ire of the Bombay High Court over violations of its previous orders prohibiting political parties and their members from putting up illegal hoardings.

A bench of justices AS Oka and AS Gadkari directed corporator Murji Patel to file a reply by March 12 as to why contempt proceedings must not be initiated against him for the violation.

India: 50 lakh names deleted from electoral rolls in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Feb 24; PTI/GANASHAKTI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has deleted as many as 50 lakh names from the voters' list in Maharashtra after revision ahead of the polls, an official said on Sunday.

Some of these names were registered multiple times or the concerned voters had died, he said.

More names were likely to be deleted in the coming weeks as the process of authentication of voters was underway, the ECI official said.

India: No place for MNS in opposition alliance in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Feb 22 (PTI) The Congress said Friday that there was no place for the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in the proposed alliance of opposition parties for Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra.

This has been conveyed to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), said state Congress chief Ashok Chavan.

Journalist from Kashmir beaten up in India; one arrested

Pune, Feb 22 (PTI) In yet another incident of assault on Kashmiris after the Pulwama terror attack, a 24-year-old journalist from Jammu and Kashmir was beaten up here.

The local police, who earlier dubbed it as an incident of road rage, registered a case against the two suspected assailants Friday evening and arrested one of them.

Court summons Rahul Gandhi, Yechury over comments on Lankesh murder

Mumbai, Feb 21 (PTI) A metropolitan magistrate's court here has issued summons to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury after a defamation complaint was filed by an RSS worker for allegedly linking journalist Gauri Lankesh's murder with "BJP-RSS ideology".

RSS worker and lawyer Dhrutiman Joshi had filed a private complaint in the court in 2017 against Rahul Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the CPI (M) and its general secretary Yechury.

India: 3 sentenced to life in prison for gang-raping teen

Thane, Feb 22 (PTI) Three persons have been sentenced to life in prison by a court in Thane in Maharashtra for gang-raping a newly-wed teen.

District Judge S A Sinha, in a recent order, convicted Naveen Ashok Bagade (43), Santosh Yashwant Shelke (22) and Rajkumar Tikeshwar Sahani (29) under section 376 D (rape by one or more persons constituting a group) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code.
