India: Man gets 7 years RI for raping tribal girl

Thane, Apr 26 (PTI) A court here has sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a tribal girl in 2016.

Special court judge P P Jadhav held Ashirwad Vishnu Patil guilty under Indian Penal Code section 376 (rape) and relevant provisions the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and awarded the sentence on Monday.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

Palghar, Apr 26(PTI) Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray Thursday said the Modi government had to spend five years in "washing away the sins" of the erstwhile Congress-led dispensation.

He said the next five years of the Modi government will be dedicated to real development.

Thackeray was speaking while addressing an election rally at Dahanu in Palghar Lok Sabha constituency, where sitting MP Rajendra Gavit seeking re-election. Gavit had quit the BJP and joined the Shiv Sena last month.

India: Man gets 10-yr RI for raping minor girl

Thane, Apr 25(PTI) A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment by a Thane court in Maharashtra for raping a minor girl in 2015.

District and special POCSO court judge S B Bahalkar on Wednesday pronounced the punishment to the accused, Shivmani Ramdulhar Jaiswar, who worked as a carpenter, and also imposed a fine of Rs 27,000 on him.

India: Pragya seeks dismissal of plea to bar her from contesting

Mumbai, Apr 23 (PTI) BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast, on Tuesday sought dismissal of the application seeking to bar her from contesting the Lok Sabha polls, even as the NIA distanced itself from the issue.

Thakur, through her lawyer, filed a reply before special judge for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases V S Padalkar, dubbing the application as "frivolous" and moved with a "political agenda".

Mumbai, Apr 24 (PTI) Urmila Matondkar, leading Bollywood actor of the 90s who joined the Congress recently, says she has faced a lot of trolling on social media and personal attacks after her entry into politics, but asserted that she is here to stay.

Matondkar, who is contesting from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency -- a BJP stronghold, said these elections will decide the direction in which the country will go and if democracy will be saved.

India: Priyanka Chaturvedi leaves INC, joins Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Apr 19 (PTI) Former Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi Friday joined the Shiv Sena.

Addressing a press conference with Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Chaturvedi said she left the Congress after being upset over reinstatement of party workers who misbehaved with her.

"It is not true that I quit the Congress after being denied Lok Sabha ticket," Chaturvedi said in response to a query.

India: Jet Airways grounds operations temporarily from Wed

Mumbai, Apr 17 (PTI) Teetering for over four months due to cash-drought, Jet Airways, flying for over 25 years, Wednesday said its last flight will takeoff later this night, after its lenders refused to offer a Rs 400-crore lifeline.

"With immediate effect, we are compelled to cancel all our international and domestic flights. The last flight will operate today," Jet Airways informed the exchanges.

India: Jet Airways operating 5 planes, seeks emergency funds

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) Jet Airways has sought emergency funds from banks and is currently operating only five planes, Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola said Tuesday.

The cash-strapped airline has already suspended its international operations till April 18.

Separately, the civil aviation ministry would convene meetings of representatives of airlines and airports on April 18 to discuss capacity expansion, rising airfares and other issues.

India: Two debt-ridden farmers commit suicide in Nashik

Nashik, Apr 15 (PTI) Two farmers allegedly committed suicide due to indebtedness in Nashik district in Maharashtra over the last two days, police said Monday.

Santosh Shelke, 42, killed himself by jumping into the well near his farm in Mharal Budruk village in Sinnar taluka Sunday, a local police official said.

He said Shelke had a loan outstanding of Rs 75000 against a local society.
