India: 5 of family booked for torturing woman for dowry

Thane, May 7 (PTI) Five members of a family have been booked for allegedly torturing a 26-year-old woman for dowry in Thane's Ulhasnagar township, police said Tuesday.

The complainant, a resident of Haweli area in Pune, has told police that her in-laws, husband and their kin would inflict burn injuries on her with hot oil, police said.

India: Rape convict gets 2-yr RI for molesting minor girl

Thane, May 6 (PTI) A 57-year-old man, earlier convicted in a rape case, has been awarded two years' rigorous imprisonment by a court in Thane district of Maharashtra for molesting a minor girl residing in his neighbourhood.

District Judge S A Sinha in her order on Saturday pronounced Arif Ahmed Memon, a labourer, guilty under Indian Penal Code section 354-A (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures). The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on him.

India: Sensex crashes 363 pts as US-China trade talks derail

Mumbai, May 6 (PTI) The BSE Sensex Monday cracked over 362.92 points in line with global sell-offs amid renewed fears that trade negotiations between the US and China are on the verge of collapse.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty dived 114 points to settle below the 11,600-level.

In a sign of derailment of trade talks between the two global economic powers the US and China, US President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened to hike tariffs on USD 200 billion worth of Chinese goods.

India: H1N1 virus has claimed 135 lives in Maha since Jan 1

Mumbai, May 6 (PTI) The H1N1 virus infection has claimed 135 lives so far in Maharashtra in 2019 with 25 people, including two from Mumbai, succumbing to it in the last 10 days, a state Health department official said Monday.

He said Pune had the maximum 36 deaths followed by Nashik and Nagpur at 29 and 23 respectively.

India: Burqa ban not demand of Shiv Sena or Uddhav

Mumbai, May 5 (PTI) Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has clarified that the demand for burqa ban made in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana was not that of the Sena or its chief Uddhav Thackeray.

In his weekly column published in Saamana's Sunday edition, Raut, who is the Marathi daily's executive editor, said, "The burqa ban was not the demand of Shiv Sena or Uddhav Thackeray. Saamana just published an analysis of the developments in Sri Lanka."

India: 62-yr-old man gets 10 years in jail for raping minor

Mumbai, May 4 (PTI) A 62-year-old man was on Saturday sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment for raping a 5-year-old girl in Kurla area in the metropolis in 2018.

Banarasi Gupta was found guilty under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code by special judge Bharti Kale.

According to the prosecution, the victim and her brother were at their aunt's house in Nehru Nagar in Kurla in February 2018.

India: 20 cattle dead after grazing in Nashik farmer's jowar field

Nashik, May 4 (PTI) Twenty heads of cattle died after grazing in a jowar field in Maharashtra's Nashik district, a local official said Saturday.

Samples of the grass have been taken and sent for testing, the official said, adding that preliminary probe points to poisoning as the cause of death.

India's Maharashtra declares drought in sub-districts due to water shortage

MUMBAI, May 4 (Xinhua): India's western state of Maharashtra is reeling under severe water scarcity with 151 out of 358 sub-districts in the state being officially declared drought prone.

The state has 4,774 tankers currently supplying water to 12,116 villages and 1,264 fodder camps catering to nearly 850,000 livestock, according to state officials.

The Indian government too has sanctioned 682 million U.S. dollars for drought relief work.

India: Man gets 10 years jail for raping 13-yr-old girl

Thane, May 4 (PTI) The Thane district court in Maharashtra has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl.

Judge S A Sinha also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the 42-year-old man (name not disclosed), a resident of Uttan in the district, after convicting him under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC on Friday.
