Saudi Arabia stuns Argentina 2-1 in group opener of 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

LUSAIL, November 22. /TASS/: The national team of Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina 2-1 in the first round group stage match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Group C match between Argentina and Saudi Arabia was held on Tuesday at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in the presence of over 88,000 football fans.

Saudi Arabian footballer Saleh Al-Shehri scored a goal in the 48th minute of the match, while his teammate Salem Al-Dawsari netted the other goal against the opponents in the 53rd minute of the game. Argentina’s legendary striker Lionel Messi scored a goal in the 10th minute of the match (scored on a penalty kick).

Argentina and Saudi Arabia were placed in Group C along with the teams from Poland and Mexico. A match between Poland and Mexico is slated to be held later in the day (at 7:00 p.m. local time), while Argentina is now set to take on Mexico on November 26, and the national football squad of Saudi Arabia will play against Poland on the same day.

Qatar is hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup between November 20 and December 18 at eight stadiums in five cities across the country. The eight stadiums at the issue are Al Bayt Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Lusail Iconic Stadium, Stadium 974, Education City Stadium, and Al Janoub Stadium.

The championship kicked off on Sunday with a picturesque ceremony and the subsequent opening match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador, which ended 2-0 in favor of Ecuador.
