KANPUR: A new revelation has startled the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB). It was nothing but the direct flow of domestic waste into the river through the pumping station.
On his inspection of Sheetla Bazaar pumping station here on Wednesday, the State Pollution Control Board’s officer Kuldeep Mishra found that as many as twenty MLD domestic wastes were flowing into the Ganges.
This was stated to be a big aberration on the part of Jal Nigam. It was apt to mention here that as many as 114 tanneries linked with the Nullah had been closed down on complaints of the Jal Nigam.
The District Magistrate had also ordered to bring the sluice valve to a halt coming through Sheetla Bazaar Nullah. The order was not followed fully. It was that kind of wastes directly falling into the river.
The tanneries will now remain closed from Jan 11 to 21. If these units were found flouting the rules, its function will begin only after completion of the Kumbh fair on the confluence of Sangam in Allahabad. Tanneries’ owners were made aware of the closure notice.
