India: Teacher in Gujrat held for raping teen Class XI student

Navsari, Feb 8 (PTI) A school teacher was arrested from Gujarat's Valsad town for allegedly raping a 17-year-old Class XI student on the promise of marriage, Navsari police said on Monday.

Statistics teacher Mayur Rana (27) raped the teen girl, a student of a school in Bilimora in Navsari, on several occasions, an official said.

India: PM Modi appointed chairman of Somnath temple trust

Ahmedabad, Jan 18 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Monday appointed the new chairman of the trust which manages the world famous Somnath Temple at Prabhas Patan town in Gujarat's Gir-Somnath district.

Modi, one of the trustees of the Shree Somnath Trust, was named to the top post unanimously, a senior official of the shrine management body said.

The post of the Somnath Trust's chairman fell vacant after the death of the incumbent, former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, in October last year.

India: Courts must be open to public scrutiny, criticism: Salve

Ahmedabad, Jan 17 (PTI) Senior Supreme Court lawyer Harish Salve has said courts must be open to public scrutiny and criticism as "institutions of governance".

Addressing a lecture organised in Ahmedabad through video-conference on Saturday, Salve said criticism of judges, judicial overreach and the manner of functioning is not scandalising courts, and the language in which such criticism is addressed should be treated with a grin.

India: Gujarat BJP MP Mansukh Vasava quits party

Bharuch, Dec 29 (PTI) Gujarat BJP MP and former Union minister Mansukh Vasava, who has been vocal on tribal issues, on Tuesday quit the party and said he would resign from Lok Sabha in the budget session of Parliament.

Vasava had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week seeking withdrawal of a Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notification declaring 121 villages of Narmada district as eco sensitive zone.

Indian Farmers Protest: Conspiracy afoot to confuse farmers says PM Modi

Dhordo (Guj), Dec 15 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said a conspiracy is afoot to confuse farmers over the new agri laws and accused the opposition of using farmers' shoulders to fire their guns.

As the protest by farmers outside Delhi entered the 20th day, Modi made a strong pitch for the agri laws enacted in September, describing them as historic and said his government was ready to remove any doubts about the legislations.

India: College student raped, thrown off building in Surat

Surat, Dec 11 (PTI) An 18-year-old college student was allegedly raped and thrown off the terrace of a building in Parle Point area of Gujarat's Surat city, police said on Friday.

According to the police, the victim was found unconscious and bleeding on the road in Parle point area surrounded by four to five-storey residential buildings on Wednesday night.

India: Over 30,000 doctors in Gujarat join IMA call for protest

Ahmedabad, Dec 11 (PTI) Over 30,000 doctors from Gujarat joined the nationwide protest called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday against the Centres decision to allow post-graduate Ayurvedic physicians to perform certain types of surgeries after training.

However, emergency medical services will remain unaffected as they have been exempted from the purview of the agitation.

India: Lukewarm response for Bharat Bandh in BJP-ruled Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Dec 8 (PTI) The Bharat Bandh called by farmer unions and supported by the Congress failed to have much impact till noon in BJP-ruled Gujarat even as protesters tried to block highways at some places by placing burning tyres on roads.

Barring a few places in the state, all the markets, shops, banks, government and private offices, and other commercial establishments functioned normally.

India: Gujarat govt relaxes labour laws to attract investment

Ahmedabad, Nov 27 (PTI) In a bid to bring in "ease of doing business" and attract new investment, the Gujarat government on Friday made some changes in the rules of two labour acts through a notification, an official said.

According to a government release, these changes were applied to the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 and Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Services) Act, 1979, to help industries hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
