JUBA, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan has withdrawn its peacekeeping forces in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Lul Ruai Koang, the spokesperson of the South Sudan People's Defense Forces, told Xinhua on Sunday in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, that all the forces that had been deployed in December 2022, as part of the East African Community Regional Force, have been withdrawn from the North Kivu region of the DRC.

JUBA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Thursday called on the government of South Sudan to quickly address issues related to elections, security concerns and humanitarian crises in 2024.

The government should fully fund and operationalize the elections and constitution-making bodies, said Guang Cong, the deputy special representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and Officer-in-Charge of UNMISS.

JUBA, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The cross-border impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan has significantly affected trade between Sudan and South Sudan amid an influx of returnees, the United Nations humanitarian agency said Monday.

The conflict, which began between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April, has resulted in reduced imports from Sudan, leading to a rise in the cost of the food basket in South Sudan, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

JUBA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- South Sudanese President Salva Kiir on Tuesday night appointed Angelina Teny as minister of interior.

Kiir, who announced the appointment in a presidential decree broadcast on the state-owned television, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, also replaced Deputy Minister of Interior Peter Puok Koang with Marial Gumke.

Teny, who is the wife of First Vice President Riek Machar, was sacked by Kiir in March as minister of defense and veteran affairs.

JUBA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- President of South Sudan Salva Kiir on Thursday night appointed James Morgan Pitia as the country's new minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation.

In a presidential decree broadcast on the state-owned television, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, Kiir appointed Pitia who had previously served as the country's ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the African Union.

Kiir sacked acting foreign minister Deng Dau Deng who had been in charge of the ministry since March.

JUBA, July 10 (Xinhua) -- South Sudanese have pinned hopes on the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2024 as they celebrated the 12th Independence Day anniversary on Sunday.

The world's youngest nation experienced short-lived peace after it won independence on July 9, 2011, from neighboring Sudan before a political dispute between President Salva Kiir and his then-deputy Riek Machar plunged the country into war in December 2013.

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — The death toll from clashes between displaced people inside a U.N. site in South Sudan has risen to more than 20, with more than 50 others wounded, the medical charity MSF said Friday.

The statement by the organization, which is also known as Doctors Without Borders, said that two of its staff were among those hurt. Some of the injured were being airlifted to the capital, Juba.

JUBA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank on Wednesday granted 70 million U.S. dollars to South Sudan to boost women's social and economic empowerment (SSWSEEP), an official said.

World Bank Country Manager for South Sudan Firas Raad said the grant is aimed at supporting female entrepreneurs in formalizing and scaling up their business activities and helping survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) access vital services that will enable them to recover and rebuild their lives.

11 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkish Embassy in South Sudan, on Tuesday, donated 183 packages of food to vulnerable Muslims in South Sudan as part of aid provided during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The food packages containing cooking oil, beans, rice, sugar and maize flour were handed over to Muslims in South Sudan by the Turkish Embassy in coordination with the Turkish charity, TIKA (Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency) and South Sudan Islamic Council.

JUBA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan, the World Bank, and two UN agencies on Saturday kicked off a COVID-19 vaccine campaign following the arrival of 3.9 million vaccine doses into the country.

Yolanda Awel Deng, Minister of Health of South Sudan said vaccination coverage remains low in the country and the country-wide campaign aims to reach the 70 percent target.

She said these extra resources will enable South Sudan to strengthen its health system preparedness and help address urgent health and nutrition needs.
