Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territories go on strike

Gaza City (Gaza Strip), May 18 (AP) Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territories went on strike in a rare collective action against Israel's policies on Tuesday as Israeli strikes rained down on Gaza and militants fired dozens of rockets from the Hamas-ruled territory.

With the war in Gaza showing no sign of abating and truce efforts apparently stalled, the general strike and expected protests could again widen the conflict after a spasm of communal violence in Israel and protests across the occupied West Bank last week.

Digital rights group slams Israeli attempt to censor Palestinians on social media

17 May 2021; MEMO: Palestinian photojournalist Mohammed Ateeq was covering the Israeli attacks against worshippers in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque last week when the security forces shot him in the back with rubber-coated steel bullets. He and his colleagues were also injured by shrapnel from stun grenades fired directly at them by the Israeli forces, who also fired tear gas, leading to journalists and worshippers alike fainting and suffocating at the holy site. These attacks began on Friday, 7 May.

Calls mount for Gaza-Israel cease-fire, greater US efforts

(AP) --- U.N. Security Council diplomats and Muslim foreign ministers convened emergency weekend meetings to demand a stop to civilian bloodshed as Israeli warplanes carried out the deadliest single attacks in nearly a week of Hamas rocket barrages and Israeli airstrikes.

President Joe Biden gave no signs of stepping up public pressure on Israel to agree to an immediate cease-fire despite calls from some Democrats for the Biden administration to get more involved.

Israeli bombing kills entire family in northern Gaza

16 May 2021; MEMO: All members of a Palestinian family were killed on Thursday night as Israeli warplanes continue to bombard northern Gaza.

The Tanani family which consisted of a father, a pregnant mother, and four children were in their home in Beit Hanoun town when the Israeli army bombed the area without any warning. The entire residential square was destroyed, including the family's home.

USA: Biden makes first call to Abbas amid Israel-Gaza fighting

(Reuters) --- U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday held his first phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas since taking office, amid heavy fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip.

Biden has dispatched an envoy to try to quell the violence that has killed dozens in Gaza and at least 10 in Israel, but U.S., regional and international efforts have yet to show any signs of progress.
