Indian Polls: Filmmakers call for vote against fascism

Mumbai, Mar 29 (PTI) Celebrated indie filmmakers such as Anand Patwardhan, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan and Devashish Makhija have come together to issue an appeal to defeat fascism in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, saying the country is going its most "testing times ever".

In a joint statement issued on the website www.artistuniteindia.com, the group of 103 filmmakers have called people "to protect the democracy of the country" and claimed that the "BJP has made the country the boardroom property of a handful of businessmen".

Indian Polls: Nishad Party quits 'Mahagathbandhan' in UP

Gorakhpur/Lucknow, Mar 29 (PTI) In a jolt to the SP-BSP-RLD 'Mahagathbandhan' in Uttar Pradesh, the Nishad Party Friday parted ways with the fledgling anti-BJP alliance and said it could "look for other options".

"The Nishad Party is no more in alliance with the Samajwadi Party," Nikky Nishad alias Riteash Nishad, media in-charge, Nishad Party, told PTI in Gorakhpur.

"There was conflict between the two parties on Maharajganj seat as Nishad Party wanted to contest with its own party symbol where as Samajwadi Party was not ready for it," he added.

India: Woman burnt alive over dowry demand

Muzaffarnagar, Mar 30 (PTI) A woman was allegedly burnt alive by her in-laws in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in Haibatpur village under Charthawal police station on Friday, they said.

The woman was identified as Sonia, who was married to Arvind Kumar, they said.

Indian Polls: Amit Shah to file nomination for Gandhinagar seat

Ahmedabad, Mar 30 (PTI) BJP chief Amit Shah, who is set to file his nomination for the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat on Saturday, started his election campaign by garlanding the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel here.

Shah has replaced BJP veteran L K Advani, who had been winning uninterrupted from Gandhinagar since 1998, from the prestigious constituency. Shah is contesting the Lok Sabha poll for the first time.

Shah will address a rally in the city before embarking on a massive road show.

Lucknow, Mar 27 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi got himself an hour of free TV and diverted nation's attention away from issues on the ground, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav Wednesday said, shortly after Modi addressed the nation on India's anti-satellite missile capability.

"Today @narendramodi got himself an hour of free TV & divert(ed) nation's attention away from issues on ground #Unemployment #RuralCrisis & #WomensSecurity by pointing at the sky," he tweeted.

India: Man gets five years' imprisonment for molesting 3 yr old girl

Sikar, Mar 27 (PTI) A court in Rajasthan's Sikar Wednesday sentenced a man to five years of imprisonment for molesting a three-and-a-half-years-old girl in the district.

The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on Karanpal Singh Rajput while pronouncing him guilty in the three-year-old case.

India: Rahul Gandhi takes injured person to hospital

New Delhi, Mar 27 (PTI) Exhibiting his humane side, Congress president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday took an injured journalist to AIIMS after he had a fall from his two-wheeler.

The Congress chief, who was on his way to the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium to address an OBC convention, saw local journalist Rajinder Vyas lying injured on the roadside near the Humayun Road.
