Sweden closer to NATO as it yields to Turkish president Erdogan demands

STOCKHOLM, June 9 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Sweden’s Supreme Court on Wednesday approved the extradition of a supporter of the Kurdish Workers Party, (PKK) to Turkiye. The decision clears the way for the government in Stockholm to meet Turkiye’s demand that it hand over several individuals it considers “terrorists” as a prerequisite for approval of Sweden’s request to become a member of NATO military alliance.

EU, US to weigh China, AI, trade strains at high-level Sweden talks

LULEA, Sweden, May 30 (Reuters) - Top U.S. and European Union officials meet in Sweden on Tuesday to weigh how best to deal with China and cooperate on artificial intelligence and other future technology as well as EU complaints about Trump-era tariffs and U.S. green subsidies.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager will attend the fourth ministerial meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) for two days in Lulea, just below the Arctic Circle.

Sweden considers letting Ukrainian pilots try out Gripen fighter jets

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden’s defense minister says the Nordic country is considering whether to let Ukrainian pilots test its JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets.

So far, Sweden has ruled out sending any Gripen fighters to Ukraine, saying it needs them for its own territorial defense. But Defense Minister Pål Jonsson told Swedish broadcaster TV4 that Sweden was looking with a “positive spirit” on a Ukrainian request to allow its pilots to try out the Swedish plane.

Rent Increase In Sweden Highest In 30 Years

STOCKHOLM, May 18 (NNN-XINHUA) – Tenants in Sweden face the highest rent increase in three decades, local media reported, yesterday.

The average increase will be 4.2 percent, following negotiations between the Swedish Union of Tenants and the landlords, Swedish TT news agency reported.

“It has been an incredibly tough and long round of negotiations,” Erik Elmgren, head of the Swedish Union of Tenants told TT about the increased rent for nearly 1.1 million apartments for the coming year.

Sweden: China and Russia are increasing their military collaboration, Japan’s foreign minister warns

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi expressed concern Saturday about Russian and Chinese military cooperation in Asia and said the security situation in Europe could not be separated from that in the Indo-Pacific region since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at a meeting of European and Indo-Pacific foreign ministers in Sweden, Hayashi said Russia’s war in Ukraine had “shaken the very foundation of the international order” and must face a united response by the international community.

Sweden:EU increases military spending by 30% since 2014 — Borrell

STOCKHOLM, May 13. /TASS/: The European Union’s military spending has increased by 30% since 2014, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said, opening the EU-Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum on Saturday.

He noted that, since 2014, the EU’s military spending has grown by 30% while this trend is even more pronounced in the Asia-Pacific region where the military spending has increased by 40% versus 2013.

Sweden: Lithuania says EU must prepare for risk of 'de-coupling' from China

STOCKHOLM, May 12 (Reuters) - The European Union needs to be prepared for the fallout from a potential deterioration in relations with China, such as might happen if conflict were to erupt over Taiwan, Lithuania's Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said on Friday.

Landsbergis said he was not advocating a "de-coupling" from China, but pointed to the break with Moscow over Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 as the type of risk for which the bloc needed to be prepared.

Nobody had called for a decoupling from Russia, yet "here were are", he said.

Sweden: PKK's 'extensive' activities are stopping us joining NATO

27 Apr 2023; MEMO: Sweden's foreign minister said the activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)'s operations in the country are hindering Stockholm's efforts to join the NATO military alliance.

"The reason why Turkiye has yet to approve our accession is due to the widespread activity of the PKK  terror group," Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said in an interview with Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter yesterday.

STOCKHOLM, April 22 (Xinhua) -- "NATO is nothing but the war machine of the United States," Nellie Puig, a Swede protesting his country joining the military alliance, told Xinhua in central Stockholm on Saturday.

"It is not a defensive alliance as they claim. It is an organization that runs the errands of the United States," said Puig.

Protests against Sweden hosting a large international military exercise and the country striving to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) were held in 17 cities across the country on Saturday.
