India: Murder case eyewitness shot dead on highway in UP

Muzaffarnagar, May 26 (PTI) A man who was an eyewitness to the killing of his brother was shot dead by two bike-born miscreants in Shamli district, a police official said Sunday.

Siyanand, 45, was shot dead on the Meerut-Karnal highway when he was returning home from a sugar mill in Shamli city last evening, the official said.

Police suspect old enmity to be the reason behind the killing.

Siyanand was an eyewitness to the killing of his brother Ravinder, who too was shot dead a few months ago.

India: Cong worker killed by suspected Naxal terrorist in Chhattisgarh

Bijapur, May 26 (PTI) A local Congress worker was brutally killed by suspected Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Sunday.

Sahdev Samrat (30), a native of Thothapara area, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons on Saturday night when he went to attend a wedding in the nearby Kostapara area in Bhairamgarh town, a local police official said.

He noticed that four to five men, armed with sharp weapons, were looking for him following which he tried to escape, he said.

India: Smriti Irani aide shot dead in Amethi: Police

Amethi, May 26 (PTI) A close aide of Smriti Irani, the newly elected MP from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead by two men, with police not ruling out the possibility of it being a "political murder".

Surendra Singh (50), a former head of Baraulia village, was shot at around 11.30pm Saturday, said Additional Superintendent of Police Daya Ram.

He was referred to a Lucknow hospital but he succumbed during treatment, Ram said.

Two suspects have been detained for questioning, police said.

Indian Polls: CWC rejects Rahul's offer to step down

New Delhi, May 25 : A crucial meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday unanimously rejected Rahul Gandhi's offer to resign as party president after the Lok Sabha poll debacle and authorised him to overhaul and restructure the party at all levels.

The meeting deliberated on the reasons behind the Congress's defeat in the elections for four long hours with various leaders urging Rahul Gandhi to continue to provide leadership to the party.

India: 2 beaten up for carrying beef, cops arrest them and 5 attackers

Seoni/Bhopal, May 25; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Suspected cow vigilantes thrashed two persons in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni with sticks, accusing them of carrying beef, following which five accused have been arrested, police said Saturday.

The group of five 'gau rakshaks' also allegedly forced one of the victims to beat up a woman accompanying them with chappals, a police officer said.

Police said that the three persons who were beaten up were arrested on May 22 as possession, transportation or sale of beef is illegal in Madhya Pradesh.

1 dead, several injured in post-poll clashes between TMC, BJP across Bengal

Kolkata, May 25; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Violent incidents were reported from across West Bengal on Saturday in which one person died and many were injured, officials said, as a face-off brewed between the ruling Trinamool Congress and a surging BJP after the Lok Sabha results were declared.

TMC alleged that a number of its party offices have either been taken over or vandalised by BJP workers.

Tis Hazari court launches e-filing facility for arbitration matters

New Delhi, May 24 (PTI) Litigants and advocates will now be able to file their cases anytime from anywhere as the district court at Tis Hazari Courts Complex launched an e-filing facility Friday for arbitration matters.

A new homepage for the court's website and a new software for its mediation centre was also launched.

The new e-filing feature would help lawyers or litigants to file cases online and keep a track of the already filed ones. The arbitration cases can be filed online at anytime at the web portal www.efiling-dl.ecourts.gov.in.

India: Surat fire toll climbs to 22, coaching class owner held

Surat, May 25 (PTI) The toll in the devastating fire that engulfed a commercial complex in Surat's Sarthana area has gone up to 22 with two more students succumbing to burn injuries, a senior police official said Saturday.

Surat police spokesperson and assistant commissioner of police P L Chaudhari on Saturday identified the two deceased students, both teenagers, as Karnavi Sitapara and Dhruvi Ribadiya.

Both were undergoing treatment in separate hospitals, he added.
