June 26 (Reuters) - Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on Sunday said Canada still has a path to a "soft landing," where it could stabilize economically after the blow by the COVID-19 pandemic, without facing a severe recession that many fear, CBC News reported.

Freeland in an interview on Rosemary Barton Live said she has to strike a balance between helping people in Canada suffering from the effects of inflation and pursuing a policy of fiscal restraint, or risk making the cost of living problem worse.

Canada, Denmark reach agreement on long-standing boundary disputes

OTTAWA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Canada and Denmark reached an agreement on Tuesday to resolve the long-standing boundary disputes over the sovereignty of an Arctic island by creating a land boundary.

According to a news release issued by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), the new agreement "also modernizes the 1973 maritime boundary within 200 nautical miles and establishes the maritime boundary in the Lincoln Sea. It further established a boundary on the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles in the Labrador Sea."

Canada to end COVID vaccine mandate for domestic travel -CBC News

June 13 (Reuters) - The Canadian government on Tuesday will announce an end to COVID-19 vaccine mandates for domestic travel on planes and trains and outgoing international travel, CBC News reported on Monday, citing unidentified sources familiar with the matter.

The government, which has faced criticism over ongoing pandemic restrictions, may bring back the vaccine mandate if a new variant of the virus is discovered, the report added.

TORONTO, May 18 (Reuters) - The agreement under which Canada turns back asylum-seekers crossing from the United States has adequate safety valves, and the U.S. asylum system has sufficient safeguards, to make the pact constitutional in Canada, the federal government argued in court documents filed with Canada's Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Under the Safe Third Country Agreement, signed in 2002, asylum-seekers crossing the Canada-U.S. border at formal crossings are turned back, with few exceptions, and told to apply for refugee status in the first "safe" country they arrived in.

Canada to deploy officers to NATO headquarters in Latvia

OTTAWA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Canada will deploy a Canadian Armed Forces general officer and six staff officers to NATO's Multinational Division North Headquarters based in Adazi of Latvia, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday.

Canadian gov't funds EV production in zero emission push

OTTAWA, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced a new federal investment in project funding for automaker Stellantis that will modernize assembly plants and increase the production of electric vehicles (EV).

According to a news release from the prime minister's office, the Canadian government is investing up to 529 million Canadian dollars (423 million U.S. dollars) into this project. The Province of Ontario is also supporting the project with an investment of up to 513 million Canadian dollars (410 million U.S. dollars).
