Bangladesh removed from UK COVID travel red list

19 Sep 2021; AA: Bangladesh has been removed from Britain’s COVID-19 travel red list following repeated requests by the Bangladeshi government.

“Travelers from Bangladesh will no longer require 10-day hotel quarantine from 22 September 2021,” Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh’s high commissioner to the UK, said in a tweet early Saturday.

Bangladesh PM eyes 60 mln Chinese vaccines in next three months

DHAKA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Wednesday her government is expecting to receive 60 million doses of Chinese COVID-19 vaccines in the next three months.

She made the remark while replying to a tabled question from a lawmaker during the prime minister's question-answer session in the parliament.

In line with a schedule given by Sinopharm, she said, "A total of 60 million vaccines doses -- 20 million doses each month -- will be available in the country from China till December from next month."

U.S. misleads world on COVID-19 origins-tracing: media

DHAKA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- "The United States and a fistful of its allies are trying to mislead the world," an op-ed article by the leading English newspaper Bangladesh Post said recently.

"On August 27, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence of the U.S. released a summary of the intelligence community assessment on COVID-19 origins, which is the latest example of America's above sinister intentions," it said.

U.N. urged to probe Bangladesh over disappearances

DHAKA,Bangladesh (AP) — A global human rights group called Monday on the United Nations to lead an independent international investigation into the alleged disappearances of government critics and others at the hands of security forces in Bangladesh, an allegation the country’s government has long denied.

New York-based Human Rights Watch listed 86 alleged victims on a webpage, providing profiles and details of each case.

Dozens of Rohingya missing after boat sinks in Bay of Bengal

DHAKA, Aug 15 (Reuters) - More than two dozen Rohingya refugees were missing and feared drowned after their boat sank in the Bay of Bengal while trying to flee a remote Bangladeshi island, officials said on Sunday.

"We are devastated that reportedly many passengers, including women and children, have tragically drowned. The confirmed number is not yet known," the United Nations refugee agency said.

Contributions to COVAX reflect China's commitment to global anti-COVID-19 fight: Bangladesh health experts

DHAKA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's contributions through the COVAX Facility have reflected Beijing's commitment to global anti-COVID-19 fight, Bangladesh health experts said.

They expressed appreciation of China's contributions after Bangladesh Tuesday night received 1.7 million Chinese COVID-19 vaccine doses shipped via the COVAX Facility.

This is the first among three consignments that are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh from China this week.

Bangladesh vaccinating Rohingya refugees amid virus surge

DHAKA,Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh’s government and aid agencies started vaccinating Rohingya refugees Tuesday as a virus surge raises health risks in the sprawling, cramped camps where more than 1 million people who fled Myanmar are sheltering.

The highly transmissible delta variant is driving an infection surge across Bangladesh, with around 20,000 infections and 200 deaths recorded so far in Cox’s Bazar district, the southern region bordering Myanmar where the refugee camps are located.

Thousands displaced as floods hit Bangladesh Rohingya camps

July 30 (Reuters) - Heavy monsoon rains triggered landslides and flash floods in refugees camps displacing thousands of Rohingya Muslims in southeastern Bangladesh this week, U.N. and other officials said on Friday, with further heavy rainfall expected.

At least six Rohingya, including three children, died in landslides and flooding while 15 Bangladeshis were killed and more than 200,000 stranded by flooding in Cox's Bazar, said Mamunur Rashid, the district administrator.

DHAKA, July 27 (Reuters) - At least six Rohingya Muslims, including children, were killed and several others injured on Tuesday after heavy monsoon rains triggered landslides and flooding in refugee camps in southern Bangladesh, officials said.

Mohammad Shamsud Douza, a senior Bangladesh government official in charge of refugees, said five people died in landslides and a child was swept away by flooding after days of heavy rain.
