Egypt's ex-presidential candidate brutally attacked in Tora Prison

06 April 2022; MEMO: Egypt's former presidential candidate and leader of the Strong Egypt Party has been assaulted in his prison cell, according to a Facebook post written by his family.

According to the post, Aboul Fotouh was attacked by guards after trying to file a complaint about why he was refused family visits.

Egypt wheat stock sufficient for 4 months, says president

06 April 2022; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday announced that his country's wheat stock for domestic consumption was "sufficient for the next four months."

"Egypt's total wheat trade amounts to 18 million tonnes annually on average," Al-Sisi told reporters, adding that around two million tonnes are being "lost annually as a result of storage-related reasons."

Detainees in Egypt start hunger strike to protest harsh conditions: Amnesty

06 April 2022; MEMO: Amnesty International said a number of political activists who have been arbitrarily detained in Egypt's notorious Tora Prison have started a hunger strike to protest the harsh conditions and ill treatment they are enduring.

The rights watchdog said on Twitter that those taking part include Ahmed Douma, Hisham Fouad and Alaa Abdel-Fattah, who also called for authorities to release them.

Ramadan kicks off in much of Middle East amid soaring prices

CAIRO (AP) — The Muslim holy month of Ramadan — when the faithful fast from dawn to dusk — began at sunrise Saturday in much of the Middle East, where Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sent energy and food prices soaring.

The conflict cast a pall over Ramadan, when large gatherings over meals and family celebrations are a tradition. Many in the Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia planned to start observing Sunday, and some Shiites in Lebanon, Iran and Iraq were also marking the start of Ramadan a day later.

Egypt increases Suez Canal tolls by up to 20%

30 March 2022; MEMO: Egypt's Suez Canal Authority (SCA) yesterday raised its toll fees for vessels passing through the waterway due to the impact of Russia's war in Ukraine.

SCA chairman Osama Rabie told reporters that the increases will be imposed on "all types of ship" using the canal. The increases will amount to between 5 and 20 per cent. "Traffic through the canal has been affected by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict," he explained.

Egyptian president, Qatari FM discuss bilateral ties, regional developments

CAIRO, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Tuesday discussed means of promoting bilateral ties at different levels, and the recent developments in the region, the presidential office said in a statement.

"The Gulf's security is linked with the Egyptian national security," Sisi said, hailing the important role Qatar plays in addressing the challenges facing the Arab world.

Egypt Turned Off Landmarks’ Lights To Mark Global Earth Hour

CAIRO, Mar 27 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt marked the annual global Earth Hour last night, by turning off lights of a number of landmarks across the country for 60 minutes, including Saladin Citadel, in the capital, Cairo.

“We participate in Earth Hour by simultaneously switching off the lights of Saladin Citadel in Cairo, Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria, the area of the Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan and the area of Deir el-Bahari temples in Luxor,” said Mostafa Waziri, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

22 March 2022; MEMO: The details of Egypt's recent currency devaluation and economic conditions went viral on social media yesterday, following an announcement by the Central Bank that it has raised interest rates alongside the devaluation of the Egyptian pound. After the announcement, the US dollar traded at 18.25 pounds, after standing at 15 pounds for the past few years.
