Egypt says government purchases exempted from India's wheat exports ban

15 May 2022; MEMO: Any agreements by Egypt's government to purchase Indian wheat will not be affected by an export ban announced by New Delhi, Egypt's supply minister said on Sunday, Reuters reports.

"For India, we are talking with them on the basis of a government agreement. The ban exempts governments including the government of Egypt," minister Ali Moselhy said at a news conference.

Egyptian Army Kills 14 Terrorists In North Sinai

CAIRO, May 12 (NNN-MENA) – The Egyptian army yesterday killed 14 terrorists, during armed clashes and military operations in the North Sinai Governorate.

The Egyptian armed forces confirmed in a statement that, seven terrorists were killed in clashes with law enforcement forces, when they attempted to attack a security outpost in North Sinai.

The terrorists’ automatic rifles, hand grenades and wireless communication devices were seized, according to the statement.

US says death of Egyptian researcher requires investigation

03 May 2022; MEMO: The death of Egyptian economic researcher Ayman Hadhoud requires a "thorough, transparent and credible" investigation, the US State Department said on Monday, after Hadhoud died in a Cairo psychiatric hospital where he was sent by the security services that detained him, reports Reuters.

Egypt frees 3 as president appears to reach out to critics

CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian authorities freed three journalists early Sunday, the head of a journalists’ union said, the latest in a string of releases as President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi appears to be reaching out to critics of his administration.

Ammer Abdel-Moneim, Hany Greisha and Essam Abdeen walked free from jail after they spent around a year and a half in detention in separate cases.

Diaa Rashwan, head of the Journalists’ Union, posted images showing the three journalists wearing white jail uniforms and embracing their families in the street.

Egypt's Suez Canal revenues hit all-time high

01 May 2022; MEMO: Egypt's Suez Canal Authority said Sunday that its monthly revenues hit all-time high in April, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the Suez Canal Authority said the international waterway made $629 million in revenues in April, an increase of 13.6% from $553.6 million last year.

The strategic waterway raised the transit fees for ships since last year amid a boom in global trade movement.

In 2021, the Suez Canal recorded its highest revenues, raking in $6.3 billion.

Tension between Egypt, Israel over Al-Aqsa Mosque

30 April 2022; MEMO: Egypt and Israel have been at odds over the "provocative" situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque, senior Palestinian sources told Rai Al-Youm on Friday.

The sources stated that Egypt had threatened Israel that it would stop its mediation between the Israeli occupation state and the Palestinian resistance.

Two Killed, 43 Injured After Bus Overturned In Sinai, Egypt

CAIRO, Apr 28 (NNN-MENA) – At least two people were killed and 43 others wounded yesterday, after a bus overturned in Egypt’s South Sinai Province, the Egyptian Health Ministry announced in a statement.

The wounded passengers were taken to the nearby Sharm El Sheikh international hospital, according to the statement.

A total of 25 ambulances were sent to the site of the accident, which was on a highway leading to the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh, according to Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, a spokeswoman for the Health Ministry.

Sudan frees ex-officials in effort to end political impasse

CAIRO (AP) — Sudanese authorities released two outspoken former government officials from prison, lawyers said Wednesday, part of trust-building measures amid efforts to end the country’s political impasse.

Sudan was plunged into turmoil after an October military coup upended its short-lived transition to democracy after three decades of repressive rule by former strongman Omar al-Bashir. Al-Bashir and his Islamist-backed government were removed in a popular uprising in April 2019.

Calls for Egypt to stop politically motivated executions

27 April 2022; MEMO: The Adalah Centre for Rights and Freedoms has launched a human campaign calling on the Egyptian authorities to halt the issuance and implementation of executions of those held on political grounds.

The rights group said the death sentences recently issued and the executions that preceded them have been handed out as a form of "political revenge", and as a result of trying to achieve justice through fair trials.
