Sudan agrees to open two more camps for refugees fleeing Ethiopia's Tigray region

9 Nov 2021; MEMO: Sudanese authorities approved the opening of two additional camps in Qadarif state on Tuesday to house fleeing refugees from the war in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia.

The Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) quoted the head of the Refugee Housing Emergency Service in Qadarif, Al-Fateh Al-Muqaddam, as saying "the opening of the two camps comes as part of the refugee commission after the recent repercussions in Ethiopia."

Sudan internet cuts complicate civil disobedience campaign against coup

KHARTOUM, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Sudanese pro-democracy groups launched two days of civil disobedience and strikes on Sunday in protest at last month's military coup, though participation appeared to be limited by continuing interruptions to internet and phone connections.

Local "resistance committees" and the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which led demonstrations in the uprising that toppled then-president Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, are organising a campaign of protests to try to reverse the military takeover.

Sudan: 'No talks, no reconciliation and no partnership' with Military Council

06 Nov 2021; MEMO: The Sudanese Professionals Association, which is leading the anti-military coup, announced on Friday that there would be no talks or partnership with the Military Council, Anadolu Agency reported.

The association posted in a statement on Facebook: "The revolution forces raised its flags and said: 'No talks, no reconciliation and no partnership."

Sudan approves Sovereign Council nominations: sources

05 Nov 2021; MEMO: Sudan army chief, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has approved the nominations of the new Sudanese Sovereignty Council, a military source said yesterday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the media that the council would be made up of "five military officials and eight representatives of the Sudan regions, as well as a female figure."

He added the news was expected to be announced "within the coming hours."

Russia refuses to reveal 'sensitive details' of Sudan military base

04 Nov 2021; MEMO: The Russian Foreign Ministry said yesterday that Moscow does not intend to disclose the details of its military cooperation with Sudan, including the construction of a Russian naval military base on the country's Red Sea coast, "due to the sensitivity of the issue".

The remarks were made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, in response to a question about the future of the agreement with Khartoum.

Head of Sudan army met with Egypt's Sisi day before the coup

04 Nov 2021; MEMO: The head of the Sudanese army held a secret meeting with coup leader turned President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the day before he suspended Khartoum's government, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In what the paper said were "a string of daring geopolitical moves", General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan reassured the US that he didn't plan to seize power and then headed to Egypt.

Israel security delegation visits Sudan

02 Nov 2021; MEMO: An Israeli delegation has visited Khartoum and met Sudanese leaders, including deposed Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, Israeli sources revealed yesterday.

Members of the Israeli delegation met with the different sides involved in the coup in an attempt to mediate a reconciliation among them.

According to Walla, the delegation likely included representatives from Mossad spy agency, pointing out that they met with Abdel Rahim Hamdan Dagalo, who is believed to hold the most power in the country.

Sudan: UN envoy meets deposed PM Hamdok, still under house arrest

The UN Special Representative to Sudan, Volker Perthes, on Sunday met with deposed Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, saying he is still under house arrest, Anadolu Agency reported.

"Just met with Hamdok at his residence where he remains well but under house arrest," Perthes wrote on Twitter.

The UN envoy said he and Hamdok discussed "options for mediation and the way forward for Sudan," stressing that he will continue "efforts with other Sudanese stakeholders."

Sudan: head of former ruling party released from prison

01 Nov 2021; MEMO: The head of Sudan's former ruling National Congress Party, Ibrahim Ghandour, was released from prison yesterday, Anadolu has reported. Ghandour was foreign minister under deposed President Omar Al-Bashir.

The senior official was detained on 29 June last year along with other Bashir aides accused of planning to foil the revolution.
