OTTAWA, May 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Canada on Thursday formally apologized for interning more than 600 Italian-Canadians during World War II.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, addressing the House of Commons, also apologized for harm suffered by members of the community, with about 31,000 declared “enemy aliens.”

UN aviation body to launch investigation into Belarus plane diversion

MONTREAL, May 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UN civil aviation agency will launch an investigation into the May 23 diversion by Belarus of a European flight and arrest of a dissident on board, it announced on Thursday.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council “decided to undertake a fact-finding investigation of this event,” the statement said.

OTTAWA, May 22 (Xinhua) -- About 50.08 percent of Canada's population were administered with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 4.3 percent with second dose as of Saturday afternoon, according to CTV.

The country, with a population of 38 million, has administered more than 20 million vaccine doses.

Canadian court rules Iran downing of Ukraine Flight 752 ‘act of terrorism’

OTTAWA, May 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A Canadian court ruled that the shooting down of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 was deliberate and an “act of terrorism,” paving the way for possible compensation for victims’ families.

The Superior Court of Justice of Ontario found that “on a balance of probabilities” two missile strikes on the jetliner shortly after takeoff from Iran’s capital Tehran on Jan 8, 2020 “were intentional.”

Canada shooting: Man shot to death at Vancouver’s airport in gang incident

RICHMOND (British Columbia, Canada), May 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A 28-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday at the Vancouver International Airport in what Canadian authorities said was a gang-related slaying.

Police were later fired on while pursuing the suspects.

The man was shot near the departure terminal at the airport, which is in neighboring Richmond, British Columbia. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Frank Jang said the victim was known to police and the incident was related to a gang conflict the region has seen lately.

Canada’s COVID-19 Cases Surpass 1.2 Million Despite Decreased Daily Cases

OTTAWA, Apr 29 (NNN-XINHUA) – Canada reported 5,071 new COVID-19 cases as of yesterday afternoon, bringing the total number to 1,200,057, including 24,106 deaths and 101,586 variants, according to CTV.

Canada’s national-level data showed a seven-day average of 7,992 new cases daily, on Apr 21-27, a 7.5 percent decrease compared to the previous seven days, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

Canada bans passenger flights from India, Pak for 30 days due to surge in COVID-19 cases

Toronto, Apr 23 (PTI) The Canadian government has banned all passenger flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days due to the unprecedented spike in COVID-19 cases in the region, the longest country-specific travel ban imposed by Canada.

The flight ban took effect from midnight Thursday, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said on Thursday.

A number of countries like the UK, Australia and Singapore have banned travel to and from India due to surge in coronavirus infections.

Covid-19: Canada to roll out big spending in pandemic recovery budget

OTTAWA, April 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Canada is expected to channel funds into childcare, wage subsidies and other pandemic recovery measures as the government presents its new budget Monday ahead of possible snap elections.

The 2021 budget is the first full fiscal plan from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and is expected to outline Canada’s recovery as virus infections surge.
