OTTAWA, July 28 (Reuters) - Canada's Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is poised to trigger a snap election two years ahead of schedule, betting that high vaccination rates and a post-pandemic rebound will help him prolong and strengthen his grip on power.

Trudeau, 49, is eyeing September for what would be his third election, sources said.

He first won a majority in 2015. But in a federal vote two years ago, after decades-old blackface pictures surfaced, Trudeau came up short of a majority, forcing him to depend on opposition parties to pass legislation.

VANCOUVER, Jul 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – Canada’s British Columbia province, declared a province-wide state of emergency, against ongoing wildfires yesterday afternoon.

More than 3,000 wildfire personnel are currently battling blazes around the province.

The state of emergency took effect at midnight Tuesday, and will last at least 14 days.

It provides the province the ability to acquire land use or personal property to prevent or alleviate the effects of the emergency.

OTTAWA, Jul 14 (NNN-XINHUA) – More than 160 unmarked graves have been found, near a former indigenous residential school, in Canada’s British Columbia province, according to a Canadian television network.

The Penelakut Tribe found the “undocumented and unmarked” graves around the Kuper Island Industrial School, operated from 1890 until 1975, on the Penelakut Island, formerly known as Kuper Island, where many horrors have already been documented, the CTV reported on Monday night.

LYTTON, British Columbia (AP) — A forensic team arrived Saturday in a Canadian town destroyed by wildfire to confirm reports that two people were killed during the blazes which forced residents to abandon their homes with just a few minutes notice several days ago.

The Coroners Service in British Columbia said they will enter the devastated village of Lytton, located 95 miles (150 kilometers) northeast of Vancouver, “only if it has been deemed safe.”

WINNIPEG, Canada, July 2 (Reuters) - Protesters have toppled statues of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II in the Canadian city of Winnipeg as anger grows over the discovery of the remains of hundreds of children in unmarked graves at former indigenous schools.

A crowd chanted "no pride in genocide" before pulling down the statues of the monarchs.

The action took place on Canada Day on Thursday, when traditionally celebrations take place across the country.

CRANBROOK, British Columbia (AP) — A Canadian Indigenous group said Wednesday a search using ground-penetrating radar has found 182 human remains in unmarked graves at a site near a former Catholic Church-run residential school that housed Indigenous children taken from their families.

The latest discovery of graves near Cranbrook, British Columbia follows reports of similar findings at two other such church-run schools, one of more than 600 unmarked graves and another of 215 bodies. Cranbrook is 524 miles (843 kilometers) east of Vancouver.

OTTAWA, June 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he has asked the Pope to come to Canada to apologise for the Catholic Church’s role running residential schools for indigenous children, after nearly 1,000 bodies were found in two mass graves.

“I have spoken personally directly with His Holiness Pope Francis to press upon him how important it is not just that he makes an apology but that he makes an apology to indigenous Canadians on Canadian soil,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa.
