Japan emperor marks last birthday on throne, prays for peace

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s Emperor Akihito, marking his 85th birthday — his last before his upcoming abdication — said he feels relieved that his reign is coming to an end without having seen his country at war and that it is important to keep telling younger people about his nation’s wartime history.

China launches experimental satellite for broadband communication

JIUQUAN, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- China launched a tech-experimental satellite as part of the Hongyun Project, a low-orbit broadband communication satellite system on Saturday morning.

A Long March-11 rocket carrying the experimental satellite blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 7:51 a.m.. It successfully entered its preset orbit.

Chinese embassy rebuts "cyber attacks" reports by Canadian media

OTTAWA, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Allegations against China of cyber attacks reported by Canadian media were fabricated stories, which have seriously misled the public, the Chinese embassy in Ottawa said Friday in a statement.

The Canadian media reported recently that U.S. authorities had indicted two Chinese nationals on the grounds of "cyber stealing."

Global stocks sink for 2nd day after Wall Street slide

BEIJING (AP) — Global stocks fell further Friday after Wall Street slid on recession fears, putting markets in London, Frankfurt, Shanghai and Tokyo on track to end 2018 down more than 10 percent.

In early trading, Germany’s DAX lost 0.5 percent and France’s CAC 40 retreated 0.4 percent. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index fell 1.6 percent and the Shanghai Composite Index ended down 0.8 percent.

The Chinese market is 2018′s worst performer, down nearly 25 percent for the year.

China calls US arrogant and selfish after hacking indictment

BEIJING (AP) — China called the U.S. arrogant and selfish on Friday after two Chinese citizens were charged with stealing American trade secrets and other sensitive information on behalf of Beijing’s main intelligence agency.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said “the Chinese government has never participated in or supported anyone in stealing trade secrets in any way.”

She accused the U.S. of undermining the development of other countries in order to defend its own hegemony.

China detains third Canadian as Huawei spat simmers

20 Dec 2018; AFP: China has arrested a third Canadian national, Ottawa said Wednesday -- a move that comes amid an already tense diplomatic spat with Beijing over the arrest of a Chinese telecom executive.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau however emphasized that the arrest did not seem to be linked to a former diplomat and an entrepreneur held for allegedly endangering China's national security.

Japan considers leaving IWC to resume commercial whale hunts

TOKYO (AP) — Japan is considering leaving the International Whaling Commission to resume commercial hunts, the Fisheries Agency said Thursday, after unsuccessfully campaigning for decades within the organization to gain support for the cause.

The agency said officials haven’t made a final decision but are considering the step.

Japan’s request for a resumption of commercial whaling was most recently denied at the IWC meeting in September. IWC imposed a moratorium on commercial whaling in the 1980s due to dwindling stocks.

Global stocks plunge after Wall Street fall on rate hike

BEIJING (AP) — Global stock prices plunged Thursday, following Wall Street down after the Federal Reserve raised U.S. interest rates.

KEEPING SCORE: In early trading, France’s CAC 40 index fell 1.4 percent to 4,709.13 points and Germany’s DAX lost 1.3 percent to 10,620,79. London’s FTSE 100 retreated 1.2 percent to 6,682.26. On Wednesday, the FTSE 100 rose 1 percent, the DAX added 0.2 percent and the CAC 40 rose 0.5 percent. On Wall Street, futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index both fell 0.6 percent.

China says trade talks with US planned for January

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese and U.S. envoys will hold talks in January aimed at resolving a tariff battle, a Ministry of Commerce spokesman said Thursday.

Timing and other details are being worked out following discussions by phone about intellectual property protection, trade balances and other issues, said spokesman Gao Feng. He didn’t respond to a question about a possible location.
