At least 89 dead in India after consuming toxic liquor in Assam

22 Feb 2019; DW: The death toll from the liquor poisoning in India's northeastern Assam state has risen to at least 89, with some reports putting the number even higher.

The owner of a local brewery and 10 more people connected to the manufacture and distribution of the liquor had been detained, local police confirmed Saturday.

At least 200 people were hospitalized after they consumed toxic alcohol on Thursday evening. Officials said that 22 people had already died by Friday evening.

India: Militant arrested in Assam's Karbi Anglong

Diphu (Assam), Feb 22 (PTI) A hardcore militant of People's Democratic Council of Karbi-Longri (PDCK) was apprehended Friday along with arms and ammunition in Karbi Anglong district of central Assam, police said.

The operation was jointly carried out by the Army and police at Borlangfer area of the district.

India: Tri-nation peace rally reaches Agartala

Agartala, Feb 20 (PTI) A cross-border motor rally to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi has arrived here from Dhaka via the Akhaura International Checkpost (ICP).

The tri-nation rally, which commenced from Rajghat in Delhi on February 4, will culminate at Yangon in Myanmar on February 24, covering 7,250km, an official release said.

Indian citizenship Bill row: Protests greet Modi in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 8 (PTI) All Assam Students Union (AASU) members shouted slogans against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and waved black flags at Prime Minister Narendra Modi who arrived here Friday evening on a two-day visit to the Northeast.

The prime minister witnessed the protests when he travelled to the Raj Bhavan here, where he will spend the night, from Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

Northeastern allies of BJP to meet against Citizenship Bill

Guwahati/Shillong/Aizawl, Jan 28 (PTI) Regional parties across the Northeast which are in alliance with the BJP will meet in Guwahati on Tuesday to put forth their objections to the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill.

They will be joined by the JD(U), NDA's major ally in Bihar, and the AGP, which recently snapped ties with the BJP in Assam over the proposed legislation that seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim nationals from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan after six years of residence in India.

India: Police case lodged against Kharge for remarks on Bhupen Hazarika

Morigaon (Assam), Jan 27 (PTI) Police have registered a case against senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge over his remark on Assam's legendary singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika, officials said Sunday.

The case has been filed based on a complaint by RTI activist Raju Mahanta, alleging that Kharge has hurt sentiments of Assamese people.

India: NECCC to talk to RS members on citizenship bill

Guwahati, Jan 23 (PTI) The North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC) comprising representatives of all the state units of the party in the region on Wednesday resolved to talk to Rajya Sabha members to prevent passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Upper House of Parliament.

The NECCC at a meeting held here took the resolution that it would take help of all Rajya Sabha members opposed to the Bill to prevent it from becoming an Act during the next session, according to a release issued by the Committee.

India: Militant held in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 21 (PTI) An NSCN(R) cadre was arrested and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered during separate raids in Assam's Tinsukia district, police said Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, Army troops launched an operation near Tirap Colliery in Ledo town and nabbed the NSCN(R) militant on Monday.

The militant has been identified as Singmai Haseng and a 7.65 mm pistol, a magazine and three rounds of ammunition have been recovered from him.

He was later handed over to the police, a police officer said.

India: Minor raped in Assam, 5 held

Nagaon (Assam), Jan 20 (PTI) A minor girl was allegedly gang raped in Hojai district of Assam and five people have been arrested in this connection, police said on Sunday.

The girl, a student of Class 8, was lured by the five persons on Friday evening when she went to attend a function at her village in Ejaarbari, where they allegedly raped her, a senior police officer said.

After registering a case at Kaki police station, police launched a manhunt and nabbed all the accused, who hail from the same village.

They have been sent to judicial custody, police added.
