BELGRADE, April 6. /TASS/: Montenegro’s State Election Commission published the final results of the presidential runoff election on Thursday with former Economic Development and Tourism Minister Jakov Milatovic winning with 58.88% of the vote.
"The State Election Commission upheld the results of the election of the president of Montenegro. Candidate Jakov Milatovic has been elected as Montenegro’s president with 222,592 votes, that is, 58.88% of the total number of votes," the commission’s statement said.
According to its information, the outgoing President Milo Dukanovic garnered 41.12% or 154,769 votes.
The runoff of Montenegro’s presidential election was held on April 2. Over 542,000 people had the right to vote; the turnout was 70.7%.
The president of Montenegro is elected by popular vote for five years and cannot stay in office for more than two consecutive terms. According to the constitution, Montenegro is a parliamentary republic while the head of state performs mostly representative functions. Nevertheless, the president has a say in the formation of the cabinet and the nomination of a prime minister.
