KABUL, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains and floods have claimed 26 lives in Afghansitan's southern Uruzgan province over the past couple of days, reported a local television channel on Tuesday.

Quoting deputy provincial governor Hekmatullah Muzamel, Tolonews reported that 26 people were killed due to downpour and flood in Khas Urzgan, Chora and Gizab districts of the province.

Scores of houses, shops and farmlands have been utterly washed away or badly damaged due to the flood, the media outlet quoted some villagers as saying.

Monsoon rains and floods, according to officials, have killed dozens of people in eastern provinces of Nuristan, Parwan, Paktia, Wardak and Zabul in the past week in the war-torn country.
