 Animal sacrifice in Tripura temple

Agartala, Nov 25 (PTI) After 57 days, animal sacrifice resumed in the Tripureswari temple in Tripura following an interim order of the Supreme Court, a temple official said on Mondauy.

The Tripureswari Temple located at Udaypur in Gomati district is over 500 years old and one of the 51 shakti- peethas in the country.

The Tripura High Court had pronounced on September 27 that "no person including the state shall be allowed to sacrifice any animal or bird within the precincts of any of the temples within the state of Tripura."

The state government moved the Supreme Court challenging the high court order and the apex court passed its interim judgement last week.

"Around 40 animals were sacrificed yesterday after the Supreme Court has given an interim order saying animal sacrifice will be allowed if it is done with certain restrictions," Tripureswari Temple manager Manik Dutta said on Monday.

The practice resumed after 57 days after Gomati District Magistrate Tarun Kanti Debnath, the main Sebait of the temple, gave permission, he said adding that the spot where sacrifices take place has been covered with clothes.

Advocate General Arun Kanti Bhowmik said the Supreme Court in its interim order has said slaughtering is allowed for religious purposes.
