Kanpur: In continuation of the NGT order dated July 13, 2017 for construction of a proposed 20 MLD CETP, a Chennai-based company has been awarded the contract. An understanding was signed between the project engineer and the company on May 9. A sum of Rs 419 crore would be spent on the construction of the common effluent treatment plant. Jajmau Tannery Treatment Association has also been formed. The sources said that the work on the construction is supposed to start in the mid-June this year.
The most important thing is that the tannery owners would lend their full support in the initiative.
The District Magistrate V V Pant would be chairman of the Committee constituted for running and constructing the new CETP. The selection of tannery owner depends on the permission of the UP Pollution Control Board. Those who have no dispute with the JAL Nigam will be included, said sources.
The DM told the fund will be made available under Namami Gangey Yojna. First instalment of Rs 6.25 crore has been released.
The SPV would consist of fifteen people including DM, Nagar Ayukt, JAL Nigam's, Principal Secretary, tannery owners and IIT experts.
This new treatment plant will be completed in two phases. In the first phase the treated water would go the fields and later it will be recycled through RO fitted into the plant.
At present 9 MLD water plant treats the tanneries' waste. The run of old 6 Sewage Treatment Plants are too costly and these go defunct too often.
