Peru’s ex-president faced bigotry for impoverished past

LIMA, Peru (AP) — When Pedro Castillo won Peru’s presidency last year, it was celebrated as a victory by the country’s poor — the peasants and Indigenous people who live deep in the Andes and whose struggles had long been ignored.

His supporters hoped Castillo, a populist outsider of humble roots, would redress their plight — or at least end their invisibility.

Ecuador reports over 30 violent deaths in 24 hours

QUITO, Dec 9 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Violence continues in Ecuador, where 31 violent deaths were reported in just 24 hours despite the state of emergency issued in three provinces, according to local press.    

Territories where exceptional measures are in force are among those which reported the highest homicide toll: Guayas (12), Esmeraldas (3) and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (2).

Colombia records two more leaders killed, 183 in 2022

BOGOTA, Dec 9 (NNN-TELESUR) — The murder of two more leaders in the Colombian departments of Bolivar and Guaviare was denounced by the Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz). 

Since the signing of the Peace Accords in 2016, the total number of murdered leaders stands at 1,403 victims, while the figure so far this year is 183, according to Indepaz. 

Peru’s president ousted by Congress in political crisis

LIMA, Peru (AP) — The president of Peru was ousted by Congress and arrested on a charge of rebellion Wednesday after he sought to dissolve the legislative body and take unilateral control of the government, triggering a grave constitutional crisis.

Vice President Dina Boluarte replaced Pedro Castillo and became the first female leader in the history of the republic after hours of wrangling between the legislature and the departing president, who had tried to prevent an impeachment vote.

Argentina signs deal with US regarding undeclared taxpayers’ assets

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 7 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Argentina’s Superminister of Economy, Industry, and Agriculture Sergio Massa signed an agreement with US Ambassador Marc Stanley for the automatic exchange between the two countries of information about undeclared assets owned by local taxpayers.

The deal is expected to allow Argentina’s tax bureau AFIP to access information on funds estimated to be around US$ 100 billion leaked to the United States by Argentine fiscal residents to avoid taxation.

Iran oil tanker arrives in Venezuela

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: An Iranian tanker carrying about 2 million barrels of ultra light-oil arrived this week in Venezuelan waters, non-government organisation, United Against Nuclear Iran, said on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Venezuela and Iran have recently expanded cooperation mainly through a swap that provides Venezuela's state-run oil company, PDVSA, with light oil for refining and diluents to produce exportable crude grades. PDVSA, in return, supplies Iran with Venezuelan heavy oil and fuel.

Peru’s president says impeachment motion against him “part of political game”

LIMA, Dec 5 (NNN-Xinhua) — Peruvian President Pedro Castillo said that an impeachment motion approved by the opposition-led Congress “is part of the political game” against him.

Castillo made his remarks in the northern region of Cajamarca, where he voted during the second round of elections that have been taking place in nine regions of the South American nation.

Castillo said he was sure that, despite the motion, his government has been “set up by the majority” of citizens and that it is necessary to “defend the popular will.”

Musk says 'possible' that Twitter gave preference to leftists during Brazil election

SAO PAULO, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Twitter owner Elon Musk said on Saturday he thought it was "possible" that personnel at the social media firm gave preference to left-wing candidates during Brazil's election this year, without providing evidence.

Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on Oct. 27, just days before Brazil's presidential second round runoff vote, when far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro was defeated by leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Landslide Hit Brazilian Highway, Killed Two, 30 Missing

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 2 (NNN-CMA) – The landslide that came down on a motorway in southern Brazil, has left at least 30 people missing, the regional government of the state of Parana said, late on Wednesday.

On Monday, mud tumbled down on the BR-376 motorway, following heavy rains and buried 16 vehicles.

Six people have been rescued, but firefighters have also recovered two bodies, authorities said, adding that, the exact number of victims was yet to be determined.
