India: Man arrested for raping 85-year-old woman

Jalna, Jun 25 (PTI) A 40-year-old man was arrested in Maharashtra's Jalna district Tuesday for allegedly raping an 85-year-old woman.

Abasaheb Tanpure, the accused, allegedly raped the woman who lives alone at her house in Wadona village in Partur tehsil Monday night.

After she filed a complaint in the morning, Tanpure was arrested.

The victim was admitted to agovernment hospital in Aurangabad. Further probe is on.

India: Man gets 7-year RI for raping minor girl

Thane, Jun 25 (PTI) A court here in Maharashtra has awarded seven years' rigorous imprisonment to a 31-year-old man for raping a minor girl in 2013.

District Judge P P Jadhav in his order last week also imposed a fine of Rs 32,000 on the accused, Manish alias Mashal Gangaram Shinge, a resident of Waghbil area here.

According to the prosecution, the accused, who was already married and had two children, developed friendship with the 16-year-old student, who also resided in the same locality.

India: Man arrested for raping daughter-in-law

Nagpur, Jun 24 (PTI) A 52-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law in Mouda village in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, police said Monday.

Police said the woman, who was unwell, had gone with the accused on June 14 for treatment, and on the way back was raped by the latter at a farmhouse, an official said.

"He tried to rape her again on June 16 but the victim managed to escape. She told her husband about the crime, and a case was registered with Mouda police station on June 22," the official added.

India: Man booked for raping teenage girl

Thane, Jun 22 (PT) A case of rape has been registered against a man for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh in Murbad in Maharashtra after offering her a job, police said Saturday.

According to police, the accused Nirmal Verma became acquainted with the girl after he foiled her bid to commit suicide by jumping onto the railway tracks in her village in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh some time back and brought her to Murbad in Thane district.

India: Maha to hike MBBS seats by 2000 from next year

Mumbai, Jun 19 (PTI) The Maharashtra government will increase the existing number of MBBS seats by 2000 from the next year to accommodate more students, the Legislative Council was told Wednesday.

Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan also told the Upper House that the government was in the process to hike seats for post-graduate medical courses.

He was responding to a calling attention raised by NCP's Hemant Takle.

India: Over 2,400 HIV deaths in Maharashtra in 11 months

Mumbai, Jun 18 (PTI) Maharashtra Health Minister Eknath Shinde Tuesday said over 2,400 people in the state have died of HIV infection in the past one year.

He was responding to a question raised by Shiv Sena MLA Vilas Potnis.

"Between April 1 last year and February this year, 2,460 people have died (of HIV infection) in Maharashtra.

However, the government has not stopped the process of carrying out determination tests of suspected people. The required funding for the scheme is still on," Shinde said.

India: Maha Govt presents Rs 20,292 cr revenue deficit budget

Mumbai, Jun 18 (PTI) Maharashtra government Tuesday presented an additional budget for 2019-20 with a revenue deficit of Rs 20,292.94 crore, higher than last year's deficit of Rs 14,960.04 crore.

The government has estimated revenue expenditure of Rs 3,34,933.06 crore against revenue receipts of Rs 3,14,640.12 crore, said Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, who tabled the budget proposals in the Legislative Assembly.

India: VBA demands Maha polls through ballot papers

Mumbai, Jun 18 (PTI) Alleging that EVMs are being manipulated, the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA) Tuesday demanded that upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra be held through ballot papers.

VBA leader A R Anjaria said the electronic voting machines are not reliable, and that even the counties like the USA have discontinued their use.

India: Jilted lover writes 'IS' message on mall posters

Thane, Jun 17 (PTI) A man has been arrested from suburban Vikhroli for allegedly writing messages mentioning terror organisation, the IS, on the posters of a mall, police said Monday.

The accused, Ketan Ghodke, had also mentioned the mobile phone numbers of a woman and a man along with the messages that read: "gazva e hind, Dadar Siddhivinayak boom, Isis is coming slipper cell is activated", said DCP Avinash Ambure.

Siddhivinayak is a famous temple of Lord Ganesh located in Prabhadevi area of Mumbai, which attracts lakhs of devotees.
