Jordan to resume flights to Damascus

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: The Jordanian government has agreed to resume flights to the Syrian capital Damascus as of 3 October after a 10-year hiatus as a result of the Syrian civil war.

Jordan's Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya also announced the reopening of the Jordanian-Syrian border from tomorrow morning to allow for the movement of freight and travellers.

Jordan's crown prince tests positive for COVID-19

AMMAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, after undergoing the routine examination implemented as part of the regulations followed at the Royal Hashemite Court.

The crown prince has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in very good health, the royal court said in a statement.

Protest against Jordan-Israel gas deal

27 Sep 2021; MEMO: Dozens of Jordanians protested in the capital, Amman, yesterday calling on the government to abolish a $10 billion gas agreement signed by the state-owned National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) with Israel.

The protesters gathered near the Ministry of Energy and NEPCO's headquarters and raised banners denouncing the deal.

Member of the event's follow-up committee, Muhammad Al-Absi, said the stand coincides with the passage of five years since the deal was signed.

AIIB Approves 250 Million-USD Loan To Jordan

AMMAN, Sept 2 (NNN-PETRA) – Board of directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), authorised 250 million-U.S.-dollar investment in Jordan, to stimulate economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank said yesterday.

According to a statement released by the AIIB, the bank’s first loan to Jordan is expected to create more jobs by unleashing the economy’s potential, especially in green growth.

Jordan resumes in-class education as COVID-19 restrictions lifted

AMMAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 2 million students resumed on Wednesday in-school learning in Jordan after a months-long hiatus amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education Najwa Qubeilat said in a statement that a plan would be implemented in the first two days of the new school year, entailing an odd-even number system for different grades students returning to the campus.

Syrian army steps up offensive on rebel redoubt in southwest city

AMMAN, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Syrian elite forces aided by pro-Iranian militias stepped up an offensive on Tuesday against a rebel enclave in a southwestern pocket bordering Jordan and Israel, according to residents, military and opposition sources.

Fighting escalated earlier this week after the collapse of a Russian peace plan meant to avert an all-out offensive against Deraa al-Balaad, the core of the city of Deraa that has defied state authority since surrounding Deraa province was recaptured by President Bashar al-Assad's forces in 2018.

Hamas rejects Jordan settlement projects

28 Aug 2021; MEMO: Chief of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh announced on Friday that his movement rejects settlement projects for Palestinians in Jordan, news agencies reported.

Haniyeh and former Hamas chief, Khaled Mashaal, visited Amman to attend the funeral of former Hamas official Ibrahim Ghosheh, who passed away at 85 years old.

Russian army patrol rebel enclave in Syria to avert offensive, sources say

AMMAN, Aug 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Russian forces moved into an opposition enclave in the Syrian city of Deraa on Tuesday to try to avert an army assault on a stronghold that has defied state authority since it was retaken three years ago, witnesses, residents, and army sources said.

Their entry brought a halt to shelling by pro-Iranian army units who have encircled the enclave, where protests first erupted in 2011, and had attempted to storm the area on Monday in the latest drive to force former rebels to surrender.

Jordan Ready To Provide Lebanon With Electricity

AMMAN, Aug 20 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan yesterday stressed its readiness, to provide all possible support to Lebanon, including providing electric power from the Jordanian grid.

Jordan will also help Lebanon get Egyptian gas through Jordan and Syria, said Jordan’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Hala Zawati.

King Abdullah II of Jordan has reiterated his country’s willingness to cooperate with partners to help Lebanon, said the statement.
