Colombian unions, students set more protests in honour of dead teenager

BOGOTA, Nov 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Colombian unions and student groups will hold another demonstration on Wednesday in honour of a teenage demonstrator who died after being injured by a tear gas canister, after an initial strike last week sparked days of protests.

Demonstrations continued on Tuesday, the sixth straight day of protests following a 250,000-person march last week organized by the National Strike Committee.

Argentina’s president-elect rejects remaining IMF money

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Argentina’s president-elect Alberto Fernandez said he would renounce the remaining $11 billion tranche of the country’s International Monetary Fund loan as soon as he takes office next month.

Outgoing resident Mauricio Macri agreed a massive $57 billion loan loan package last year, but the austerity measures he imposed failed to right the economy.

Bolivia appoints first ambassador to US in 11 years

LA PAZ, Nov 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Bolivia appointed its first ambassador to the United States in 11 years, officials said, as the interim government resets the country’s foreign policy after the departure of Evo Morales.

Walter Oscar Serrate Cuellar has been given the key posting, the foreign ministry announced on Twitter, filling a position left vacant since a diplomatic spat between La Paz and Washington in 2008.

The high-profile appointment, which has to be approved by Congress, comes as the caretaker government prepares to hold new elections that exclude Morales.

Priests guilty of abusing deaf children at Argentine school

MENDOZA, Argentina (AP) — Two priests were found guilty on Monday of sexually abusing deaf children at a Catholic-run school in Argentina and sentenced to more than 40 years in prison, in a case that has shaken the church in Pope Francis’s homeland.

A three-judge panel in the city of Mendoza sentenced the Rev. Nicola Corradi to 42 years and the Rev. Horacio Corbacho to 45 years for abusing children at the Antonio Provolo Institute for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children in Lujan de Cuyo, a municipality in northwestern Argentina.

Colombia: Pres Duque opens talks following protests

BOGOTA, Nov 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Under-fire Colombian President Ivan Duque, the target of days of unprecedented anti-government protests, on Sunday opened a national dialogue aimed at assuaging popular anger.

Duque, who is deeply unpopular just 18 months after his election, “initiated the social dialogue” with mayors and other officials at 3 pm, the presidency said in a statement.

Oil from spill in Brazil washes up in Rio state

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Oil from a spill that has contaminated a stretch of Brazil’s coast was detected in Rio de Janeiro state, the navy said, as President Jair Bolsonaro warned the country was preparing for the worst.

Some 300g – a small quantity of oil – were found far from the region’s most famous beaches, in the sand in the town of Sao Joao da Barra, as the spill moves southward.

The town is located about 300km north of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s tourism capital, and far from the state’s most emblematic beaches such as Copacabana.

Center-right victory on hold as Uruguay vote too close to call

"The Chamber of Deputies unanimously voted to approve the bill on a special and transitional period for holding general elections," the tweet reads.

The document was earlier approved by Bolivia’s Senate. Now it will be sent to interim president Jeanine Anez for signature.
