India: Kanpur's Barra-5 market encircles with encroachments

Kanpur: There are more than 650 shops in the market of Barra-5 area here. Solidified (pucca) shops of electronics, clothes, cosmetics, sweets etc. exist but what remains annoying is the pavement shops of vegetables, fruits, clothes, groceries, bakery etc. arranged in front of the shops.

It is alleged that these footpaths and street vendors had to pay between Rs 50 and 500 per day. This appears to be a pavement deal.

Many times people start quarrelling with each other about setting up shops back and forth instead of sidewalks, it is reported.

In the evening, chaos in the market remains visible as the shops along the pavement arrange. The hawkers surround the road.

Carrying out the vehicles in such a situation, becomes an uphill task. if a car enters inside the market, a jam is sure to happen. Animals are loitering due to the presence of the vegetable market. Several accidents have happened but no action initiated by the civic bodies.

Years-old market around the Barra-5 intersection faces encroachments. The road here is about 30 feet wide and there are footpaths of 15-15 feet on both the sides. There are about 150 pucca shops in the market, but in front of them, from the road to the footpath, more than 500 illegal peddlers and handcarts are occupying the space.
