CAIRO, Apr 13 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, held yesterday, the first phone conversation after the mutual diplomatic ties were resumed, the Egyptian presidential office said in a statement.
“President al-Sisi received a phone call from Qatari Emir on the occasion of Ramadan,” Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson, Bassam Rady, said.
“The president expressed his thanks to the Emir for his congratulation, wishing the occasion to bring welfare, prosperity, and blessings for the two countries and all Arab and Islamic countries’ peoples,” the spokesperson added.
This is the first phone conversation between the two leaders, after the signing the Al-Ula Agreement in Saudi Arabia on Jan 5, that ended the more than three years’ boycott on Qatar by the Arab quartet, which includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.
Relations between Cairo and Doha deteriorated after the army-led 2013 uprising that toppled the late Islamist leader, Mohamed Morsi, who was backed by Qatar, in response to mass protests against his rule.
