Chinese envoy expects new starting point for Libyan issue after Berlin conference

BERLIN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping's special envoy Yang Jiechi on Monday reiterated that political solution is the only way for the Libyan issue, expecting a new beginning to address the issue after the Berlin Conference on Libya.

Yang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a press briefing after he attended the Berlin Conference on Libya held on Sunday.

Algerian President Tebboune says his country ready to host talks between ‘Libyan brothers’

BERLIN, January 20. /TASS/: Algeria is categorically against the current armed conflict in Libya and is ready to host a dialogue between Libya’s conflicting parties, Algeria Press Service news agency reported on Monday citing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune as saying.

The news agency quoted President Tebboune as saying at the international high-level conference on Libya in Germany on Sunday that the international community should "assume its responsibilities by imposing respect for peace and security in this country."

Germany adds brown coal to energy exit under landmark deal

Merkel to hold talks with European Commission president before conference on Libya

BERLIN, January 15. /TASS/: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold an informal meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday, January 18, Ulrike Demmer, a deputy spokesperson for the German government, said at a briefing on Wednesday.

"At the Federal Chancellor’s office, the chancellor will hold informal talks with [Ursula] von der Leyen, focusing on pressing political issues," she said.

According to Dana Spinant, the European Commission deputy spokesperson, von der Leyen had plans to attend the conference on Libya in the German capital.

Germany investigates three over 'spying for China'

15 January 2020; AFP: German prosecutors on Wednesday said they were investigating three people who allegedly spied for China, with media reporting that a German former EU diplomat was among the suspects.

"We can confirm an investigation into suspected espionage" for Chinese state security bodies, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office told AFP.

Germany plans to hold Libya summit on Jan 19: participants

The summit will coincide with a one-day visit to Berlin by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, about which Erdogan’s office, which announced the trip, gave no further details.

Erdogan’s presence is seen as essential to the success of any conference on Libya, since Ankara’s decision to deploy military advisers and possibly troops there has made it a major player in the country’s long-running civil war.

German chancellor Merkel says Berlin will host Libya peace talks

During a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, Merkel said: “We hope that the joint efforts by Russia and Turkey will lead to success, and we will soon send out invitations for a conference in Berlin.”
