India: Sisodia urges Amit Shah to stop demolition drive in Delhi

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to stop the "destruction" ensuing in the national capital due to the anti-encroachment drive by the BJP-ruled municipal bodies.

In an online briefing, Sisodia slammed the "bulldozer politics" of the BJP and claimed that the civic bodies are planning to raze 63 lakh dwellings in the national capital.

India prohibits wheat exports with immediate effect

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI) India has banned wheat exports with immediate effect as part of measures to control rising domestic prices, according to official notification.

However, the export shipments for which irrevocable letters of credit (LoC) have been issued on or before the date of this notification will be allowed, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification dated May 13.

"The export policy of wheat is prohibited with immediate effect ," the DGFT said.

Indian state of economy cause of 'extreme concern': Chidambaram

Udaipur, May 14 (PTI) Asserting that the state of the economy is a cause of "extreme concern", senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday said taking into account global and domestic developments, it may be necessary to contemplate a reset of economic policies.

Addressing a press conference, Chidambaram said a slower rate of growth has been the "hallmark" of the present government in the last eight years, and the post-pandemic recovery has been "indifferent and halting".

In her inaugural address at the party's 'Chintan Shivir' here, she urged delegates to deliberate with an open mind and send out a clear message of strong organisation and unity.

Thane, May 11 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has moved an application in a court at Bhiwandi in Maharashtra's Thane district, seeking permanent exemption from appearance in a defamation case filed against him.

Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) J V Paliwal on Tuesday directed the complainant, local RSS activist Rajesh Kunte, to respond to the application and posted the matter for further hearing on May 18.

India: Protests erupt as bulldozers roll into Delhi's Shaheen Bagh

New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) Protests erupted in Shaheen Bagh on Monday with hundreds of people, including women, opposing the SDMC's anti-encroachment drive as bulldozers rolled into the area in the presence of heavy police personnel.

Following the protest, the SDMC officials, who were part of the anti-encroachment drive, returned with bulldozers without conducting the exercise, an official said.

India: LPG price hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder

New Delhi, May 7 (PTI) Cooking gas LPG price on Saturday was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder to record high levels on the back of firming international energy rates.

A 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in the national capital will now cost Rs 999.50 as against Rs 949.50 per cylinder previously, a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers showed.

This is the second increase in LPG rates in six weeks. Rates were hiked by Rs 50 on March 22.

India: Only Congress governs for welfare of poor, middle class families: Rahul

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday stepped up his attack on the government over the hike in price of domestic LPG cylinder, and said only his party governs for the welfare of poor and middle class families.

Cooking gas LPG prices were on Saturday hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, the second increase in rates in just over six weeks following the firming of international energy rates.
