Wanted Naxal terrorist killed in J'khand

Dumka (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A wanted naxalite, carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh, was killed by security forces in an encounter in Jharkhand's Dumka district on Sunday, police said.

Shahdeo Rai alias Talada was killed in an encounter in the jungles of Shikaripara in Dumka. He was the prime accused in the killing of the then Superintendent of Police, Pakur district, Amarjeet Balihar, in July 2013, Superintendent of Police, Y S Ramesh said.

India lose One-day cricket series-opener in Sydney

Sydney, Jan 12 (PTI) Rohit Sharma's individual brilliance was not enough to make up for a floundering top and middle order as India suffered a 34-run defeat at the hands of a resilient Australia in the first One-day International, here Saturday.

Sharma conjured up a magnificent 133 of 129 balls for his 22nd ODI hundred but eventually it only helped in reducing the defeat-margin as India ended up at 254 for nine while chasing a 289-run target.

Three of India's top four batsmen could not reach double-digit and lasted a mere 11 balls.

Indian CBI row: Cong seeks immediate removal of CVC

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Amid a row over the removal of CBI director Alok Verma, Congress Sunday sought "immediate removal" of the chief vigilance commissioner, alleging that he had acted like a "puppet" in the hands of the government.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi at a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, said, the "CVC (central vigilance commissioner) should be sacked or tender his resignation", but the "CVC must go".

There was no immediate reaction from the Central Vigilance Commission or the government.

India: Cong leaders to meet in Lucknow for 2019 LS elections

Lucknow, Jan 12 : Close on the heels of the SP-BSP announcing an alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, senior Congress leaders including AICC in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad will meet here Sunday to chalk out the party's strategy.

Two Kasmiris killed by Indian security forces

Srinagar, Jan 12 (PTI) Two militants were Saturday killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Katpora area in south Kashmir's Kulgam district this evening after receiving specific information about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

As the forces were conducting the searches, the militants fired upon them. The forces retaliated, ensuing an encounter in which two militants were killed, he said.

Kolkata, Jan 13; PTU: Gujarat independent MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani said Sunday that the Centre's move to provide 10 per cent quota to upper caste poor is a step towards realizing the RSS-BJP's agenda to remove caste-based reservations from the system.

President Ram Nath Kovind Saturday gave his assent to the constitutional provision to provide 10-per cent reservation in government jobs and education to economically backward section in the general category. The bill was passed by the Parliament on January 9.

India: Naxal terrorist arrested from Giridih

Giridih (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A Maoist, who came home to observe festival in Chitara village in the district, was arrested on Sunday, police said here.

Yodho Tudu was wanted in the killing of a policeman during an encounter on March 30, 2009 near Merampahari of the district, said Bagodar sub-divisional police officer Binod Mahto.

20 India fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Rameswaram (TN), Jan 13 (PTI) At least 20 Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested Sunday by the Sri Lankan Navy for fishing off Neduntheevu, sources said.

Eleven fishermen hailing from Pudukottai district and nine from Jegathapattinam were surrounded by the Lankan Navy for fishing in the Lankan waters early Sunday morning and were later taken to Karainagar for an interrogation, they said.

Their boats were impounded and the fishermen were later sent to jail, they added.

India: Naxal terrorist held in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Jan 12 (PTI) A Naxal carrying a reward of Rs 3 lakh on his head was arrested in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, police said Saturday.

Chainu alias Chukla (24) was allegedly part of a Maoist team involved in an attack in Aranpur area in which two policemen and a Doordarshan cameraman were killed on October 30 last year, a senior police official said.

Acting on a tip-off, he was nabbed from Kuakonda police station area by a joint team of the police's special task force (STF) and District Force Friday, the official said.

India: Missing veterinary doctor found dead in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP) Jan 12 (PTI) A 45-year-old veterinary doctor was found dead at Morna town under Bhopa Police Station limits here on Saturday, officials said.

The deceased Satish Kumar was missing since Friday, said SSP Sudhir Kumar. Officials believe Satish had been abducted and murdered by his kidnappers.

The victim's body was found with head injuries and it has been sent for post-mortem, they added.
