28 Oct 2021; MEMO: Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki yesterday called for removing current President Kais Saied, suing him and his aides for "destroying the state and carrying out a coup against the Constitution."
Saied dismissed parliament and seized near total control of the country in July, in a move critics called a coup.
On Facebook, Marzouki said: "Tunisia is heading towards a worse scenario and the state is bankrupt. The Prime Minister [assigned by Saied] travelled to the Gulf to look for support. Of course, this support will be conditional."
He added that the referendum Saied is planning to carry out "is a death certificate for the state of law and institutions."
Marzouki called for peaceful resistance to remove Saied and prosecute him and his aides for "destroying the state and carrying out a coup against its Constitution and legitimacy."
He stressed the "importance of unity among all political factions and syndicates putting political differences aside in order to save the state, law, legitimacy and the Constitution."
Most of the political factions in Tunisia reject Saied's measures and consider them a "coup against the Constitution." Saied has rejected this and said his actions were an effort to save the state.
