India: Suspending 12 BJP MLAs beyond remainder of session unconstitutional: SC

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday held that a resolution suspending 12 BJP MLAs from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly beyond the period of the remainder of the session held in July 2021 is unconstitutional and irrational .

The apex court delivered its verdict on the pleas filed by the 12 BJP MLAs, who had challenged their one-year suspension from the state assembly for allegedly misbehaving with the presiding officer.

India: Modi wears Uttarakhand cap on Republic Day

New Delhi, Jan 26 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi ditched his traditional turban look on Republic Day this year and wore a traditional cap from Uttarakhand with an image of the brahmakamal, the state flower, and sported a stole from Manipur.

Official sources said Modi uses the brahmakamal whenever he offers prayers at Kedarnath.

Turbans have been a highlight of the prime minister's sartorial choices at Independence Day and Republic Day events.

India logs 255,874 fresh COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) After being over three lakh for five consecutive days, the single day rise in COVID-19 infections was recorded at 2,55,874, taking India's total tally of cases to 3,97,99,202, according to Union health ministry data updated on Tuesday.

The death toll has climbed to 4,90,462 with 614 daily fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The ministry said that active cases have decreased to 22,36,842 and comprise 5.62 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.15 per cent.

India: 86 pc Indians want voting to be made compulsory: Survey

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) An overwhelming 86 per cent people want voting to be made mandatory in the country, according to a survey released on Tuesday on the occasion of the 12th National Voters' Day.

The pan-India survey, conducted with a sample size of over four lakh people by location-based social network platform Public App, also found that over 80 per cent of respondents trust the current voting process in the country.

India: Congress leader RPN Singh resigns from party

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Congress leader and former union minister RPN Singh on Tuesday resigned from the party and is likely to join the BJP.

He announced on Twitter that he was starting his new political journey.

Singh is also the in-charge for Jharkhand affairs of the party, where the party is in power along with the JMM.

"Today, at a time, we are celebrating the formation of our great Republic, I begin a new chapter in my political journey. Jai Hind," Singh said on Twitter.

India: Don't want people's livelihood to be affected, Covid curbs to be eased ASAP: Delhi CM

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said that his government does not want livelihood of people to be affected and Covid restrictions will be eased as soon as possible

Restrictions were put in place in view of people's health, Kejriwal said after hoisting the national flag at the Delhi government's Republic Day function

"Delhiites have suffered the most due to Covid. We don't want that your livelihood is affected but your health is important, so we had to put restrictions," he said

India: 2 Hindu bodies seek to intervene as parties in SC in PIL alleging hate speeches against Muslims

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) Two Hindu organisations, Hindu Sena' and Hindu Front for Justice, have moved the Supreme Court seeking to intervene as parties in a pending plea in which notices have been issued to the Centre and others on allegations of hate speeches made against Muslim communities at Haridwar and New Delhi.

India: COVID-19 death toll climbs to 489,409

New Delhi, Jan 23 (PTI) India logged 333,533 new coronavirus infections, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 39,237,264, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.

The active cases have increased to 2,187,205, while the death toll has climbed to 489,409 with 525 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The active cases comprise 5.57 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.18 per cent, the ministry said.

India: Over 4 crore (40 million) people pushed into poverty in country: Rahul

New Delhi, Jan 23 (PTI) Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that over four crore people have been pushed into poverty in the country and that there has been development of only "Hamare Do".

"'Vikas overflow' only for 'Humare Do'! While our 4,00,00,000 brothers and sisters are pushed into poverty," he said on Twitter.
