India: Budget for whom? asks CPI(M)

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday questioned the government on the purpose of Union Budget 2022 and asked why the wealthy have not been taxed further.

The budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, does not tinker with personal income tax rates. It also does not raise standard deduction, which was widely anticipated in view of elevated inflation levels and impact of the pandemic on the middle class.

India: No change in personal income tax rates in Budget

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) Belying expectations, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman did not tinker with the personal income tax rates in the Budget for 2022-23.

The minister also did not raise standard deduction, which was widely anticipated in view of elevated inflation levels and impact of the pandemic on the middle class.

The standard deduction currently stands at Rs 50,000.

There was no change income tax slabs in the personal income tax category in the Budget unveiled on Tuesday.

India: CBI changes team probing Dhanbad judge murder

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has changed the team probing the death of Dhanbad judge Uttam Anand, officials said on Saturday.

The development came after the Jharkhand High Court recently slammed the agency for its "laxity" in probing the murder, and observed that it seemed that the CBI was trying to quit the investigation and even protect the accused.

India reports over 235,000 Covid cases, 871 fatalities in a day

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) With 235,532 people testing positive for the coronavirus infection in a day, India's total tally of cases increased to over 4.08 crore, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Saturday.

The death toll has climbed to 493,198 with 871 fatalities reported during the 24-hour period, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The active cases decreased by 1,01,278 to reach 20,04,333 -- 4.91 per cent of the total infections -- while the country's recovery rate stands at 93.89 per cent, the ministry said.

Adani Total Gas wins 14 city gas licenses, IOC 8

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) A joint venture of billionaire Gautam Adani-run group's gas arm and Total of France on Friday walked away with the most 14 licenses to retail CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to households in the latest city gas bidding round, according to oil regulator PNGRB.

Adani Total Gas Ltd won city gas rights in 14 out of the 52 geographical areas (GAs) for which Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) declared results on Friday.

India: Two more arrested in Kasturba Nagar gang-rape incident

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Day after a 20-year-old woman was allegedly abducted, gang-raped and paraded by her attackers in east Delhi's Kasturba Nagar, police arrested two more people in connection with the incident, officials said on Friday.

With this, eight women and three men have been arrested, a senior police officer said.

India: Illegal snooping using Pegasus amounts to treason: Cong

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday attacked the Centre over a New York Times report which claimed that the Indian government bought the Pegasus spy tool in 2017 as part of a deal with Israel, saying illegal snooping using the spyware amounts to "treason".

According to the report in The New York Times, the Israeli spyware Pegasus and a missile system were the "centerpieces" of a roughly USD 2-billion deal of sophisticated weapons and intelligence gear between India and Israel in 2017.

India: Google to invest USD 1 bn in Airtel; to buy 1.28 pc stake for USD 700 mn

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Internet giant Google will invest USD 1 billion in telecom major Bharti Airtel which includes equity investment as well as a corpus for potential commercial agreements, to be identified and agreed on mutually agreeable terms over the course of the next five years.

Google made the investment as part of its Google for India Digitization Fund.

The death toll has climbed to 492,327 with 627 fatalities reported during the 24-hour period, the data updated at 8 am showed.
