India: Renewal of registration for 15-yr old govt vehicles to stop from Apr 1, 2022

New Delhi, Mar 13 (PTI) The government departments will not be able to renew registration of their vehicles older than 15 years from April 1, 2022, if a proposal in this regard issued by the the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is finalised.

It has sought stakeholders comments to amend related rules in this regard issuing a notification.

Once approved, this will be applicable to all government vehicles - central or state governments, union territories, PSUs, municipal and autonomous bodies, as per the notification.

India: Two new IPL teams to be auctioned in May

New Delhi, Mar 13 (PTI) The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a 10-team affair from 2022 as the BCCI has decided to auction two new teams in the month of May during the final phase of upcoming edition.

The BCCI top brass including president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah on Saturday had a meeting on execution of various policy decisions approved by the IPL Governing Council at the start of the year.

India: NSUI holds protest over rising unemployment

New Delhi, Mar 12 (PTI) The Congress party's student wing, National Student Union of India (NSUI), organised the "Chhatra Adhikar March" on Friday to protest against rising unemployment in the country.

Thousands of students and party workers from Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh gathered at the NSUI office here before beginning their march towards Parliament building raising slogans like "Naukri Do Ya Degree Wapis Lo" (give us jobs or take our degrees back).

India: Raut calls for all-party visit to Belgaum where Marathis are victimised

Mumbai, Mar 13 (PTI) Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday alleged that Marathi people residing in Karnataka's Belgaum were being victimised, and said an all-party delegation from Maharashtra should visit the city in the neighbouring state to resolve the ongoing stand-off.

Talking to reporters, Raut said that in the last eight days there have been instances of attack on Shiv Sena leaders and the party's office in Belgaum by pro-Kannada outfits.

India now an electoral autocracy', says Sitaram Yechury

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday said India is now an electoral autocracy in response to media reports on Swedish Institute's democracy report that downgraded India.

Modi-led government in India has used laws on sedition, defamation and counter terrorism to silence critics. India's level of liberal democracy registered a steep decline since its high in 2013. What a shame," he said quoting from the report.

India no longer a democratic country: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Thursday claimed India was "no longer" a democratic country, quoting media reports on Swedish Institute's democracy report that downgraded India.

"India is no longer a democratic country," he said on Twitter, tagging a news report citing Sweden's V-Dem Institute's democracy report that has downgraded India from 'world's largest democracy' to 'electoral democracy'.

India: Uproar in assembly over northeast Delhi riots issue

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) The Delhi assembly witnessed heated exchanges between members of the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP on Thursday, after ruling party MLA Amantullah Khan accused a political party of playing a role in the northeast Delhi riots last year.

Khan, who is the chairman of the Minority Welfare Committee of the Assembly, made the allegation while presenting its report on compensation for the victims of the communal riots that took place in February 2020.

India: Cong seeks judicial inquiry into luxury bus charges against Gadkari

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday demanded a judicial inquiry into the allegation that a Swedish firm gave a luxury bus to a company linked to union minister Nitin Gadkari, who has denied the charge as "malicious, fabricated and baseless".

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the reports of the bus contract scam are "indeed very disturbing". She said the prime minister who used to speak about probity in public life is today "forced to be silent. He does not even want to talk about this".

India: Delhi Uni teachers go on strike over no salaries for 6 months

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) Thousands of Delhi University teachers went on a strike on Thursday to protest non-payment of salaries for the past six months.

The call for university "shutdown" was given by the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) on Tuesday as many employees of the 12 DU colleges, that are 100 per cent funded by Delhi government, alleged that they had not received their salaries and other dues for over six months.

India: 4 BJP MLAs marshalled out of Delhi Assembly

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI) Four BJP MLAs were marshalled out of the Delhi Assembly during the ongoing Budget Session on Wednesday.

The BJP MLAs demanded a discussion on alleged corruption in the procurement of buses by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Speaker Ram Niwas Goel told them he will allow a discussion on the issue on Thursday, but they persisted with their demand to hold it on Wednesday itself.
