Saudi journalist and govt critic disappeared in Saudi consulate in Istanbul

Washington, Oct 3 (AFP) A veteran Saudi journalist who has been critical of the government has gone missing after visiting the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, the Washington Post reported.

Jamal Khashoggi, who writes opinion pieces for the Post, has not been seen since entering the consulate in the afternoon, according to his fiance who accompanied him but waited outside until it closed, the newspaper said.

German journalist stabbed in Saxony-Anhalt: reports

Naumburg; 2 Oct 2018; DW: Three youths in Saxony-Anhalt allegedly stabbed a journalist and made the Hitler salute outside a supermarket. The victim is reportedly in hospital where he is receiving treatment for a six-centimeter-deep stab wound.

A freelance journalist was reportedly stabbed in an attack by three teenagers in Naumburg in the northeastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, local media reported.

Bhima Koregaon case: Court lifts Gautam Navlakha’s house arrest

The Delhi High Court has ended the house arrest of Gautam Navlakha saying his detention had exceeded 24 hours which is “untenable”. Gautam Navlakha, was one of the five rights activists under house arrest in the Bhima Koregaon case.

Supreme Court also said the accused could seek legal recourse in an appropriate court.

Russian airstrikes in Syria reportedly killed 18,000 people

30 Sep 2018; DW: A Syrian war monitor has claimed Russian airstrikes in Syria have killed more than 18,000 people over the past three years. But Russia says the figure is actually closer to 85,000.

More than 18,000 people have been killed in Russian air strikes since Moscow started a bombing campaign in Syria exactly three years ago, a monitor said Sunday.

Russia's military intervention in support of the Syrian government on September 30, 2015 changed the course of the war, allowing President Bashar al-Assad's regime to retake large swaths of the country.

PLO urges UN to list Israel as "state of children rights violation"

RAMALLAH, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) sent a letter on Monday to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urging him to list Israel as a state that "violates children's rights" in its annual report on children and armed conflict.

The letter, sent from PLO's Secretary General Saeb Erekat, came two days after Israeli troops killed two Palestinian children in Gaza on Friday.

General strike held in Palestinian territories to protest Jewish nation state law

RAMALLAH, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian territories in West Bank, Gaza Strip and Palestinian towns inside Israel witnessed Monday a general strike in protest of the recently passed Jewish nation state law in Israel.

The strike was called for by Palestinian national and Islamic factions in coordination with the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens in Israel.

The strike aimed at highlighting the consequences of the new basic law endorsed by Israeli parliament on the rights of the Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories, according to the organizers.

India: Pendency of cases bring disrepute to system: Justice Ranjan Gogoi

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Chief Justice of India-designate Ranjan Gogoi has said he has a plan to deal with the pendency of cases which has been bringing in a lot of "disrepute" to the judicial system.

Justice Gogoi, who will take over as the 46th CJI on October 3, said Saturday he has a plan to deal with the backlog of cases and he will "unfold" it soon.

He was speaking at an event 'Role of Bar and Bench in Social Engineering,' organised by the Youth Bar Association of India.

Truck torched in Odisha on suspicion of cattle smuggling

Bhadrak (Odisha), Oct 1 (PTI) Unidentified miscreants have torched a truck and damaged four other vehicles after they found that cattle were being allegedly smuggled in the vehicles in Odisha's Bhadrak district, police said.

The incident happened at Asurali under the jurisdiction of Dhamnghar police station Sunday, sparking tension in the area for sometime, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Manoranjan Samal.

Israel Arrests 11-Year-Old Cousin of Palestine's Ahed Tamimi

Gaza; GANASHAKTI: Samer Tamimi, the 11-year-old cousin of famed teen Palestinian activist Ahed, was arrested on Friday by Israeli occupation forces, as reported by journalist Dena Takruri.

The child's father said the army arrested Samer and other two boys his age after they failed to capture other men they were looking for. Nothing is known about his current whereabouts or when he could be released.

Samer has a scar above his right eye, the product of a bullet from the Israeli army who shot him while he was playing.

Define the term 'urban naxal', asks Romila Thapar

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Eminent historian Romila Thapar, who petitioned the Supreme Court against the house arrest of five Left-leaning activists, has asked government to define the phrase 'urban naxal', saying either they do not understand the meaning of the term or the activists like her do not.

Talking on the house arrests of five activists Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha, she said these are the people who are fighting against social injustice.
