Tunisia's Ennahda calls for probing president's assassination claims

22 Aug 2021; MEMO: A leader of Tunisia's Ennahda Movement has called for an investigation into President Kais Saied's accusations for certain parties of plotting assassinations, reports Anadolu Agency.

"The fragile political, social and psychological situation in our country can't bear even just speaking about violence and killing," said MP Samir Dilou, a member of the movement's Shura Council.

Tunisia: Former anti-corruption chief under house arrest

21 Aug 2021; MEMO: Chawki Tabib, former head of the Tunisian Anti-Corruption Authority (INLUCC), has confirmed via his Facebook page that he has been played under house arrest.

"The chief of a security unit that has been stationed since 10 PM Tunis time (9.30 GMT) in front of the door of my apartment, and informed me that the official in charge of running the Ministry of the Interior issued an order to place me under house arrest," Tabib wrote.

Tunisia: Authorities close Anti-Corruption Authority headquarters after evicting employees

21 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisian police forces on Friday have abruptly closed the headquarters of the Tunisian Anti-Corruption Authority (INLUCC) after evicting its employees.

Witnesses told German news agency DPA that the governor of Tunis came to INLUCC's headquarters, located in the prestigious Buhaira area (close to the centre of the capital), accompanied by police forces.

Tunisia president sacks chiefs of security, national guard

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied yesterday appointed Sami Al-Hichri as director-general of National Security and Shukri Riahi as commander of the National Guard, as part of changes he has been making in leadership.

The appointments were announced in a brief statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic, after Saied received Reda Gharselawi, who is assigned with running the Ministry of the Interior, yesterday afternoon at the Carthage Palace, according to the official news agency TAP.

Tunisia: Saied rejects dialogue and rules out alternative road map

18 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied declared on Monday that he rejects dialogue and vowed not to back down in the political crisis gripping his country, Arabi21 has reported.

"The road map is the one drawn by the Tunisian people, and I will not back down," he insisted. "Whoever imagines or makes himself believe that I will back down is deluded. Let them go away with their alternative road map and the dialogue that they think they can hold."

Tunisia: Ennahda MP appeals against president's decision to suspend parliament

18 Aug 2021; MEMO: Ennahda Member of Parliament, Farida Al-Obeidi has submitted two petitions to the Administrative Court in order to override the president's decision to suspend parliament.

The MP said yesterday that the first petition aims to override Presidential Order No. 80 related to suspending the powers of Parliament, and that the second relates to stopping the implementation of the order.

Now in charge, Tunisian president faces looming fiscal crisis

TUNIS, Aug 17 (Reuters) - At the Sidi Bahri market in Tunis, shoppers were pleased with the president's attacks on corruption and high prices since he seized control of the government last month in moves his foes called a coup.

President Kais Saied has criticised Tunisia's economic policy, urged traders to charge less for food and medicine and accused unnamed businessmen of stealing billions of dollars while police are investigating corruption in state industry.

Democratic Current condemns banning Tunisia parliamentarian from travel

16 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's Democratic Current yesterday condemned a recent government decision to ban the party's deputy, Anwar Al Chahed, from travel.

In an official statement, the party described the decision as an "arbitrary measure that was carried out with neither a judicial or administrative verdict nor a consultation with the interior ministry."

Tunisia records 155 wildfires within 36 hours

12 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisia has recorded the outbreak of 155 fires since Monday due to high temperatures.

The Tunisian Civil Defence said in a statement yesterday that 12 wildfires broke out in the forests. No human casualties were recorded.

The statement confirmed that "all fires are under control, except for six wildfires that are still active in the governorates of Bizerte, Jendouba and El Kef."
