BAGHDAD (AP) — Khalil Ibrahim’s four sons are among thousands of followers of an influential Shiite cleric staging a sit-in outside Iraq’s parliament after storming the building last week in a stunning move that threw the country into a new era of political instability.

Ibrahim is behind them all the way, he says — as are practically all his neighbors in Sadr City, the huge Baghdad district of millions of largely impoverished Shiites that is the heart of support for the cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr.

Israel strikes on Gaza kill 4, militant commander among dead

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have killed four people and wounded another 15.

The Islamic Jihad militant group says a senior commander, Taiseer al-Jabari, is among those killed.

Israel launched the airstrikes on Friday after days of soaring tensions following the arrest of a senior Islamic Jihad militant in the occupied West Bank. Israel says it is targeting the group, raising fears of another all-out Gaza war.

Iraqi provinces suspend work in government offices due to extreme heat

04 August 2022; MEMO: Rising temperatures in Iraq have promoted eight out of the country's 18 provinces to suspend work at government offices today, Thursday.

The capital, Baghdad, as well as the provinces of Wasit, Najaf, Babil, Basra, Diwaniya, Muthanna and Diyala will witness a day off across government offices, due to high temperatures that are reaching 50 degrees Celsius today.

Lebanon is the angriest country in the world

04 August 2022; MEMO: Lebanon has been rated as the angriest country in the world, followed by Turkiye and other countries in the region, according to newly-released data from the American company, Gallup, for the end of 2021 to mid-2022.

In Gallup's Global Emotions Report, which analyses emotions in over 100 countries around the world, 49 per cent of people surveyed in Lebanon were found to experience anger on a regular basis, even on the day prior to the survey.
