Indian Polls: Priyanka's Varanasi roadshow gathers big crowd

Varanasi (UP), May 15 (PTI) In a big show of strength in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow here Wednesday evening.

Priyanka Gandhi began the roadshow, which had a route similar to Modi's jamboree last month, by garlanding the statue of Madan Mohan Malviya at the gates of the Banaras Hindu University.

Modi had held a roadshow here on April 25, a day before he filed his nomination papers.

India: Sword of Damocles hangs on 225 tanneries

Kanpur: As many as 225 tanneries in Jajmau are now going to face the pang of disconnection of the power supply in the midst of order received from the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board Headquarters. 

On inspection of the tanneries a number of complaints were received regarding running of the tanneries. This prompted the UPPCB for initiating swift action. 

India: 25-yr-old shot at for marrying woman from same 'gotra'

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) A 25-year-old man sustained a bullet injury following an argument with the relatives of his wife who were against their marriage as they belonged to same 'gotra', police said Wednesday.

The couple eloped and got married in November last year, police said, adding that the two were staying in Matiala in West Delhi after their marriage.

India: Mamata conducts protest march against vandalism

Kolkata, Mar 15 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday conducted a protest march against the vandalism during BJP president Amit Shah's roadshow in the city on Tuesday.

Accompanied by leading intellectuals of the city, Banerjee walked for about 6 km from the Gandhi Bhavan in Beleghata to Shyambazar five-point crossing in north Kolkata area in the northern part of the city.

3 Kashmiri killed by Indian security forces in Pulwama district of Indian administered Kashmir

Srinagar, May 12: Three Kashmiris have been killed in an alleged encounter with Indian security forces in Pulwama district, an Indian army official said. A civilian and an India soldier were also killed.

The Indian security forces' spokesman alleged that a cordon and search operation in Delipora village of Pulwama was conducted following information about presence of Kashmiris separatists there, a police official said.

India: 3 ULFA(I) terrorists surrender in Assam

Guwahati, May 16 (PTI) Three cadres of an outlawed outfit have surrendered before the police in Tinsukia district of Assam, a senior police officer said.

One of them was allegedly involved in the killing of Bhaskar Kalita, the officer-in-charge of Bordumsa Police Station, Director General of Police Dr Kuladhar Saikia told reporters here on Wednesday.

Indian Polls: BJP, Cong sweat it out to capture Parrikar's Panaji

Panaji, May 16 (PTI) After the elections for Goa's two Lok Sabha seats, the BJP and the Congress are preparing for a face-off in the bypoll for Panaji Assembly constituency, which was held by former chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

The bypoll was necessitated after Parrikar's death in March.

Refusing ticket to the late chief minister's son, Utpal, the BJP has fielded former MLA Siddharth Kunkolienkar.

Bike rider badly hit by fast running car in Rania

Kanpur: A bike caught fire after collision  with a speeding car on the highway near Rania on Wednesday morning. Owing to hard hitting the bike rider was thrown at a distance. The accident brought the traffic to a standstill. 

According to the reports, the bike rider Ramji Katiyar r/o Barra forcefully came on the highway from the petrol pump. He was employed as Amin at the Civil Court. The moment after a speeding car badly hit the bike that got dragged with the car for a length of distance. Eventually the car stopped at the divider. 

Indian Polls: SP-BSP-RLD alliance predicts 'bad days' for BJP after results

Ballia (UP), May 14 :  The SP-BSP-RLD alliance on Tuesday predicted "bad days" for the Bharatiya Janata Party after the Lok Sabha election results on May 23, claiming that even the foundation of the saffron party would not be visible because of the "alliance storm".

Addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati said: "From May 23, the bad days of the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah will start."

India: Accused booked a month after gang-rape of Dalit woman in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 15 (PTI) More than a month after a 23-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, a case has been registered against the two accused, police said on Wednesday.

The action came on the directive of the senior superintendent of police following protests. According to the complaint, the woman was raped on April 8 at a village in Purkazi area by the accused, who also recorded a video of the incident to blackmail her, the police said.
